"He had a cancellation and was able to come out the day I called. He verified that we actually didn't have mold growing in the one area. Since that area was connected to an indoor hot tub room, he checked the tub room just to verify that all was ok in there. He gave me some tips on preventing mold in that tub room and informed me about some other areas to watch (as this was in the basement and we have had water get inside with heavy rain) and I asked him about some marks on my basement ceiling. He was very knowledgeable and helpful. Will definitely be calling if need for future services."

Air Duct Cleaning questions, answered by experts

The number of return air vents a house should have depends on its overall square footage. You'll need one supply vent and one return vent for every 100 to 150 square feet of living space. This means that, ideally, there should be at least one return air vent in every room. However, if the room is 100 square feet or larger, it's better to have two or three. A 2,000-square-foot home should have between 13 and 20 return air vents, in total.

If your ducts are relatively free from significant damage, mold, or excessive debris, the benefit of air duct cleaning is that it can address many common issues. Dust, allergens, and particles can accumulate in your ducts, affecting air quality and the efficiency of your HVAC system. Cleaning your ducts can help you restore optimal airflow and remove pollutants that might be circulating in your home.

However, cleaning might not be the best solution if your ducts have severe damage, leaks, or are significantly outdated. In these cases, replacement might be necessary to ensure proper functioning and prevent future problems.

The most common duct sizes used in residential homes are round ducts 6 to 12 inches in diameter. This size is small enough to be easily installed into walls and ceilings, yet is wide enough to allow for adequate airflow through the home. Improper duct sizing can cause HVAC issues, increased energy bills, and a drop in HVAC efficiency, which translates into a less comfortable home.

Yes, vent deflectors do work to redirect hot and cold air distributed from your HVAC system. If installed correctly—and magnetic deflectors make it easy to DIY— you might find that a deflector is enough to redirect the warm or cool air where you prefer it to be. At the very least, it’s an easy, inexpensive experiment before committing to the bigger project of moving the air vent to a new location.

Some homes in warmer locations have air vents in the ceiling because they do a better job of cooling than floor vents. This is because hot air rises and cool air sinks. Homes located in cooler climates tend to have vents in the floor because they do a better job of delivering warm air, which rises.
