"In July of 2018, our home needed new siding due to our rotting cedar siding. Ian from Valley Exteriors came out to our house. He was honest in telling us that they were booked straight through to 2019. He created a 3D model of our home and sent it to me through email to try different types of product. Early 2019, Ian showed us several different types of siding. When we made our final decision we were presented with the estimate of cost and a timeline. The job began on time. We were extremely pleased with the crew that came to work on the job. The foreman, Dan, kept us informed of progress made and asked if there were any adjustments to completed work. The job was completed on time to our satisfaction. What we loved about all of this was the communication from the entire staff at Valley Exteriors. They were honest with all costs and timelines. If we had any questions, they were promptly answered. This year we needed gutters and a gutter cover. We called Valley Exterior. Their estimate came in 10k under the local gutter place for the same materials. Also they were able to place the downspouts on the sides of the house. The other company insisted that they had to be on the front of the house. It was a no brainer. We couldnâ t have been more satisfied with the end results. The crew finished the job on time and the cost was exact to the estimate. This company stands behind its work and truly wants their customers to be happy. I would recommend them to everyone. I know why they are always booked out â because they are that good. Now on to our windows â we will be calling them again!"

"DJK Environmental did a great job removing asbestos floor tiles and mastic in my basement. All the work was done as promised and everyone I talked to at the company was professional and courteous. The price was reasonable and they even came out on a Sunday to complete the work. I had a tight deadline and they were booked out a few weeks - but they found time to meet my deadline. Highly recommend!"

"The house was complicated and our siding installer Freddy, paid attention to every detail. The work took longer than expected, but knowing it was being done correctly made up for it. We also did the roof, and they did an excellent job."

Siding questions, answered by experts

You can put new siding over clapboards, but it’s not recommended. Some sidings, like vinyl siding, can go over clapboards with sheathing like a foam layer in between. However, it’s best to remove clapboard siding if you plan on replacing it with new siding. Burying wood clapboards underneath new siding can create risks of rot and mold, or hidden insect damage. It can also create warping issues over time. Removing clapboards allows you to properly install a new sheathing, as well as clean up the exterior wall and look for any signs of damage.

You should restain or refinish your home's cedar siding every three to seven years to maintain its appearance and ensure maximum protection. The precise frequency depends on several factors, including your local climate, the siding's exposure to severe weather like direct sunlight, rain, and wind, the quality of the initial stain application, the type of stain used, and the condition of the wood.

Homeowners in harsh climates with high humidity and significant direct sunlight should plan on restaining every three years, while those in milder locations can wait up to seven years. For the longest-lasting protection in particularly harsh environments, consider using an opaque stain.

If you're looking for a lower-maintenance alternative, vinyl or aluminum siding are options to consider. Although their installation cost may be higher, they don't require as much upkeep over time, which can provide more value, especially in areas with excessive rainfall or high humidity.

While any dark color of vinyl is likely to fade, dark red and dark brown vinyl tend to fade faster and more noticeably compared with other dark colors. White is the color least likely to fade, but it will show stains, mildew, and dirt more prominently than darker colors.

The lifespan of siding ranges from 20 to over 100 years, depending heavily on the material, climate, quality of installation, and maintenance.

  • Vinyl, Wood, and Aluminum: Typically last 20 to 40 years. Engineered wood may need replacement after just 20 years.

  • Fiber Cement: Lasts around 50 years.

  • Brick and Stone: These are the most durable, lasting for a century or more with proper care.

The longevity of any siding can be shortened if it's not properly maintained or if damage is not repaired promptly. Regular cleaning is vital. It's time for a replacement when you see widespread damage, signs of water intrusion, or a spike in energy costs.

While homeowners' insurance can include coverage for siding, general wear and tear of siding is not covered. If your siding is rotting—especially because you haven’t kept up with proper siding maintenance—replacement siding will likely not be covered by your homeowners' insurance policy. Instead, insurance generally covers siding repair or replacement if your siding has been damaged by extreme weather, vandalism, fire, or some kind of collision, like by a vehicle.
