St. Augustine is a hardy grass that’s relatively easy to grow, but it requires regular lawn maintenance to stay healthy. If you notice your grass is growing quickly and it’s hard to keep up, cut down on how much you water and fertilize it. Another helpful method is to mow the grass at the highest setting your mower will allow. Mowing at a higher setting slows grass growth since the blades won’t need to repair themselves as quickly if they’re kept at a longer length.

If you apply too much fertilizer to your grass, it can take about three weeks to recover. If you still have dead patches after three weeks, it might be time to remove the dead grass and overseed the affected area. Since overfertilizing can also cause problems with fungus, leading to further damage to the grass, monitor your grass color and growth for one month after over fertilizing.

It depends on the condition of the grass during the drought. If your grass completely died, it won’t turn green again after drought. However, if it just went dormant, you still have a chance to revive your lawn once drought conditions have passed. Follow proper lawn care practices after a drought to try and get your lawn back to its healthy, green self.

You can use a fungicide to help control powdery mildew, but you should apply it judiciously as it can damage soil health and persist in the soil. Most of the time, proper watering, surface drying, and limiting shade can control powdery mildew without needing harsher interventions. If you have a repeated problem with powdery mildew, you can also try planting a shade-resistant type of grass that will be less susceptible to the fungus.
