Small jobs welcome

"Luis and his team were prompt, professional, and very hardworking. He and his team completely replaced our front deck and resurfaced our side porch/stairs with composite decking. Both turned out beautiful and we have had many compliments on our new decks. I would recommend him and his team for any project!"

Hello, my name is Dakota Kangas! I am a 24 year old carpenter and have been in the construction occupation for 6 years! Some of my jobs have included 12 family apartment buildings, decks, remodels on bathrooms and interiors of homes! Owned a business for 1 year building spec homes for Tycore but decided it wasn’t for me. In my free time, I like to be outdoors hiking, camping, softball, volleyball, DIY projects, hunting, fishing, and working out. I am currently serving in the U.S Army National Guard and have been for the past 6 years! I would love to be able to make your home look better with quality work! I look forward to hearing back from you! \n\nHave a great day! \n-Dakota Kangas

"I called and left messages requesting information from three different deck installation companies. Tech Five was the only company that bothered to call me back and it was even within 24 hours. Nick and his crew were excellent from start to finish. Nick came out the next day and evaluated the project with great suggestions and thorough explanation. He was extremely knowledgeable of, and accommodating to, what we wanted regarding our new deck. The crew was polite, friendly, efficient and knew just what they were doing. They provided excellent quality of work and ran on schedule. I would highly recommend Tech Five for your deck building needs!"

"Met with contractor the week prior to review the work to be done. Had recently decided to have a contractor do the work rather than ourselves prior to new flooring being installed. Contractor came out and reviewed what needed to be done and supplied a quote within 2 days as requested. Reviewed the quote and the Angie's List discount which the Contractor had applied up front and we agreed to move forward. Contractor came out early and started work within a couple days of acceptance of quote. Started early everyday (before 8am) again by our request and worked until a good time at end of day about the time we were getting home from work. ALWAYS cleaned up after themselves and asked if we needed anything else done before they left. Another bonus - No surprises. Job was completed on schedule, in fact a couple hours early so that we could get ready for the flooring company to follow within 2 days.
Appreciate the job that Matthew's team did.
Would recommend without hesitation!

Deck Maintenance questions, answered by experts

Deck stairs should have at least three stringers rather than two. The recommended minimum width for stairs is 36 inches, and the International Association of Certified Home Inspectors recommends at least three cut stringers to provide sufficient support on wood decking stairs of this width. Generally, stringers should be a maximum of 16 inches apart for wood decking and 12 inches apart for more flexible composite decking.

The best base materials for a ground-level or floating deck are typically gravel and crushed stone (also known as landscaping rocks). These options are inexpensive, provide excellent drainage, prevent weeds, and help minimize moisture buildup, which reduces shifting and rotting. For added stability and to evenly distribute the weight, you can use concrete deck blocks or pavers. While more expensive, concrete blocks and pavers offer a sturdier base than gravel or crushed stone alone.

As with patios, there are many types of deck choices to choose from to add personalization to your home. Some common deck options include:

  • Attached decks are anchored to the home and include simple ground-level options or multi-level structures with stairways and separate landings.

  • Detached island decks are not attached to the home; they’re a freestanding structure in the yard.

  • Wraparound decks connect the back of the house with at least one other side and often are built with railings for safety.

  • Multi-level decks connect your deck through varying levels of elevation, featuring landings that are attached to stairs.

Yes, it’s definitely possible to build a pergola on an existing deck. All you need to do is attach the pergola support beams to the deck’s joists and build up from there. Beware that mistakes can damage your deck, so if you’re at all unsure of the process, play it safe and hire a pro for your custom build.

Before installing any materials under the deck for removing moisture, you should perform some prep work on the ground. Work the dirt under the deck to create a grade away from the home. A grade of at least six inches for every 10 feet works well. Do not leave a gap between the dirt and the home’s foundation where water could pool. Once you or a contractor regrades the dirt under the deck, you then can add materials over the top.
