Valentine provided a professional, thorough, and quality job on our roofing project. We had interviewed a couple of contractors prior to contacting them, and as nice and courteous as they were, they were either way over our budget, or calling us every two days to see if we had made a decision yet. When Kes walked in our door, it was truly a breath of fresh air. He was so professional, honest and up-front with everything, and not pushy in the slightest. He instilled an immediate trust of the company in us and we knew we were going to use Valentine after his first visit. Plus, he was just a super nice guy - we almost wanted to invite him to stay and have dinner with us! He knew we were about a year away from being in a position to move ahead, and he completely gave us our space. That was so important; the aggressive sales approach of other companies was a complete turn off to us. Once we were ready to begin, Joe was super on-the-ball with letting us know what would happen and when, and it all went exactly as he said it would. I appreciated how early the team arrived each day, and was seriously impressed at how diligent and hard working they all were. They easily worked 10 hour days, and there was no standing around. Such nice guys, too. I tried to provide little treats for them each day and they were just so, so grateful. Clearly the team has a top-notch work ethic, and courtesy and respect to go right along with it. The finished product itself is beautiful. Everything was to (even beyond) our expectations. The cleanup was superb - almost like no one was ever there. I also appreciated the added touches like cleaning my skylights. It was a job well done all around, and I am recommending Valentine to the many other residents of my neighborhood who are now needing roof replacements. Thank you to the entire team for going above and beyond from start to finish. It's a big investment, and we have absolutely no regrets about choosing Valentine.

Our experience did not match the good reviews Valentine gets here on Angie's List. I'd like to say that we were just unlucky but we had so many problems and on different issues that it was clearly not luck that was the problem. I don't know how closely most customers review the roofer's work. Each day I would look at the work from the ground, and at the end of the job went up on the roof to look at the details. I was worried about the final result enough to hire a home inspector. He said he had seen worse roofs but it appeared that "they were in a hurry." That is roughly my feeling, which is that the techniques were OK, with some exceptions, but the application of those techniques, the workmanship, was poor. I'll give some examples below: -They did not install the correct underlayment we had specified for the valleys on day 1. Fortunately we discovered this and they fixed this on day 2 (this problem would not have been visible by day 3). After that we reviewed all their materials as they were going on, we found one other problem before it was installed. -At the end of day 1 they had removed the old roof and installed the underlayment on a section of the roof. It rained overnight and the area leaked in several spots. There is some debate about this but generally underlayment alone should be water proof. -The project lead/main worker did not understand English well at all. My rough guess is maybe 50% of the time he probably did not understand me despite multiple attempts. This was very frustrating. They do have a English speaking project manager back at the office but he does not want to be your point of contact, he pushes you back to the local person who does not speak English. -We found a number of drink cans, pencils, building material scraps in our attic. (We also found a lot of debris from the old roof removal but that was expected, all the extra trash was not.) -Where two roofs intersected at an angle, there were large holes in the attic (in one case about 4 inches high and wide) at the intersection where you could see daylight (allowing wind driven rain, and animals entry into attic). When I brought this and other problems to the attention of the manager back at the office he said he could not do anything based on just my word, he needed pictures! This was the opposite of what I was expecting. Instead of worrying about the quality of his company's work, and fixing an obvious problem, he appeared to be putting roadblocks in the way. I'm guessing most customers would not be able to generate the pictures (i.e. would not get on the roof). I was also surprised that they apparently had no independent QA function within the company. They appeared to be taking the word of the local manager/worker, the same person who had created the problems. -We found tools, nails, screws, and staples in our gutters. (We also found numerous nails, staples, and screws around the outside of our house. The latter may be hard to clean up so I'm not too worried about this but gutters are an obvious place to clean.) -We found 5 nails and staples in our driveway after they had cleaned the driveway. (By the end of the project we didn't trust them, so fortunately we did our own clean up. These were not "office" staples. These are roofing staples, maybe 1.5 inches long and long nails. These would easily puncture tires.) -In a number of places they removed wood trim on the house to install flashing. But when they reinstalled the trim it was very sloppy. Trim pieces would be smashed together, bent away from the underlying house, or they did not put nails in the wall pieces, so it would move to the touch. In some "hidden" corners they had removed pieces of trim and not replaced it. When we had them come back to replace these pieces they just laid the pieces in place with no nails or glue. So a touch would dislodge them. -This one, as near as I can tell, is at least partially the fault of the original builder. Once the roof was complete there was a gap between the start of the roof surface, and the start of the fascia board (so in the gutter area) in about 80-90% of the roof edges. This gap could be as large as 2". Wind driven rain and pests (insects or animals) could enter these gaps into the attic. This is clearly not acceptable. When I brought this to the attention of Valentine they said it was the fault of the original builder, that they did not properly align the roof edge with the start of the fascia board. This seems plausible. But I fault Valentine for not bringing this problem to our attention before the work started. This problem could have been fixed in a fairly easy way during the roofing itself. Instead I'm having to do this myself on a ladder after the fact where its much more difficult. From what I can gather, anyone going from a shake roof to a composition roof, has a chance of having this problem. There were a number of other problems I have not discussed here. In general I'm not very picky. The main problems I've described above were functional problems where water or pests could enter the roof, or trim was not put back to protect the house, or nails in the driveway that could puncture our tires. I did describe a couple of things that were just aesthetics, such as the trash in the attic, to illustrate the sloppiness but I actually don't care much about those issues. Valentine was not the cheap choice, they were in the middle of our bids. We intentionally did not choose one of the cheapest options, we wanted to pay for more quality. I don't think we got that quality.

Heriberto, the crew leader on this project has installed hundreds of roofs for us and is hands down one of the truly premier roofers in Washington state. We are very lucky to have him. He is admittedly at times difficult to understand and that was the issue on this particular project. We regret that we did not meet [member name removed]'s expectations and have used it as a learning experience. To our knowledge every customer concern has been resolved. The roof is expertly installed, does not leak, and is under our lifetime warranty.

We had a scheduled appointment at 3:30 p.m., and Randy showed up exactly on time. We have a cedar roof that is about 7-10 years old, and we were concerned with several shakes that were warping and curling away from the roof. Randy explained to us that this was normal wear for cedar roofs. He also cautioned us against companies that offered to fix the shakes by nailing them back down, because they would pop back up again in time, or break altogether. He recommended staying off the roof, and not to worry about the warped shakes, unless there is a leak (there isn't). If the warped shakes bother us, he said the whole shake can be replaced, but told us there wasn't any work that needed to be done to the roof, and that there is still a lot of life left. Randy was very professional and knowledgeable, and we will definitely keep this company in mind for future work!

The service was great. All the work was done within a week. Our old cedar shingle roof was removed and a new presidential 3 tab was installed. We also had a skylight added. The crew worked quickly and spent long hours to get the job done. Besides the noise of the actual job we never heard the crew yelling or blasting music etc. They were professional and easy to communicate with. I was concerned about bathroom facilities before the job started, not knowing what they typically do. The roofers came equipped with their own trailer and potty though! The roof cost us a pretty penny but it needed to be done and will last many years to come. I believe it has a 50 year lifetime guaranteed. The crew was proactive in moving our plants and patio furniture out of harm's way before begining the job as well as cleaning up the debris and putting everything when they were finished.

Valentine Roofing did an excellent job replacing the roof on my home and shed as well as replacing two skylights. From the planning stages to the completion of the project, everyone was extremely professional, respectful and caring about each detail. All my questions were answered and the personal care that everyone took with me was exceptional. When the work was done, everything was cleaned up very well and I even received a thank you gift in the mail! I would highly recommend Valentine to anyone in need of a new roof!

The entire process was painless for me. From the estimator, to the office staff, to the guys who actually did the work I was informed what would happen next. They did exactly what they said they would do, when they said they would do it. The crew that did the work seemed to be quite competent; especially the job foreman. It took three long days for the large roof and another day for the downspouts. Before the main crew left they did a through cleanup--it was like they were never there. All in all, I'm pleased with the results so far. We had some rain after the job was done and the roof and downspouts worked as expected.

Totally professional outfit. The salesperson we worked with (Kes Anderson) printed a quote at the first visit (he has a computer and printer in the van). The quote ended up being accurate in the end. The quote was the second-lowest of the 6 other firms we invited to quote. We called Valentine?s references, which were included in the proposal folio, and of course they had only good things to say. We expected this but sought details. It was apparent they too did their competitive research. We also visited Stoneway Roofing Supply in person (partly because of curiosity about materials costs) and were told that Valentine is financially responsible about paying them (which apparently is not a given in the industry, and important for buyers like us in order to avoid or release any lien on the home) and that "they know how to install a roof." Upon making the deposit, Kes set the expectations so that any unpleasant aspects of the job were known up front. There were absolutely no surprises and Kes deserves credit for setting the expectations accurately. The project manager (Joe Greer) was sensitive to our scheduling needs, got the order right, was easy to reach. He visited our house at the end of the job to inspect it. Neither Joe nor Kes were pushy or salesy like the other roofers we called. They just kept everything very to-the-point and businesslike, and were as straightforward as anyone could ask for. We figured the caliber of the people Valentine hires for the front end work more than likely says something about the standards for the roofing crew too, which turned out to be correct. The crew leader (Eddie Burto) was took every possible step you could imagine to protect the deck, including lots of plywood and tarp. We were clear up front that protecting the back deck was important to us, and he took great care to ensure that our priority was met. One thing we were pleasantly surprised with was how the gutters were left in better shape than when they started the job, and I am referring to structurally, not cleaning. We didn't ask for gutter work and they certainly didn?t have to do it, but it meant something to us that they exceeded expectations. The entire crew wears red and they roll in with their clean Valentine vehicles and keep it totally professional from A to Z. The crew waves back if you wave to them but they don?t try to make friends, they just get the job done. As far as we can tell, the roof job itself it very tight. It?s hard to see everything up there from the outside of the house, but from inside the attic on a sunny day it is absolutely pitch black in there except for where the attic fan is (highly recommended to keep the house cool in the summer), so we know there are no holes. The cleanup was perfect. No damage to anything. Again?totally professional. Fair disclosure: Valentine is sending us a $50 gift certificate for our time to file this review, hence the detail. They don't know what the review will say, but they do know we were generally satisfied.

The estimate and follow through were very professional and easy. They were able to start early due to the recent streak of good weather and finish the job on time. They stuck to the estimate and answered all my questions. Only grip would be that they nicked of couple placed on the siding - not a very big deal though. All in all very happy with the work.

I scheduled the job in August and they replaced the cedar shake roof with a composite roof in December. The price was in the middle range. They sent a crew that assured me they would take care of everything. I could not be there the entire time so I left my phone number in case they had any questions. They said they would be there at 8:00 but never started until 10:00. The driver who brought the dumpster waited both times when he delivered it and picked it up but he finally left. I asked them to save some of the shingles and put them on a tarp I left in the back yard. They assured me they would. That never happened. When I asked why they didn't save the shingles the crew "leader" said he told his crew to save them but they must have forgotten. I was later told it was not their policy to save shingles. He said he would bring some shakes by but he never did. They left a big mess of dirt and roofing material on one side in my garage and never mentioned it to me. I found it several weeks later. The phone cord was left draped across the middle of the roof. I am a single senior woman and did not appreciate having to climb up on my roof to move it up against the house. Replacing the roof was very costly and I was totally disappointed in the communication and professionalism they provided. This makes me question the quality of the roof but so far it seems okay. I was pleased with company they hired to do the gutters. If I was a radio commentator I am sure things would have been different.

I sincerely apologize for this inconvenience. The crew leader in charge of this project was someone who we had spent many months grooming, and was promoted from within, as we like to do. Despite our care and efforts in promoting the right people, we simply missed on this hire. Needless to say, this person no longer works here. I also want to note that we sent over our most experienced crew leader to inspect all the work and we can confidently say that the workmanship is sound. The customer experience however, left a lot to be desired. Which I deeply regret. Connor Valentine President, Valentine Roofing, Inc.

Of the 4 bids I received for a complete roof replacement, Valentine roofing was neither the highest or lowest. They were, however the most professional and thorough from start to finish. The lead time was longer than others, and they did not require the 50% down payment that other contractors did, but I took both of those as signs of a healthy business. Alberto, the foreman on site was good about reporting the job progress each evening, and the crew did a thorough job cleaning up each night. I would recommend their service to others. .

Valentine roofing came out a few months back to give me a estimate, being they just did my sisters roof, I was pretty certain I had an idea of quality of service I would be getting. They had to do a complete tear off of the old roof and repair several boards. They had a crew of 5-6 for my small house and had it all pretty much buttoned up on 2 1/2 days....Looks great and the best thing that was a total surprise is they cleaned all my nasty gutters out and did a fantastic clean up job. nice work guys!!!!

Friendly courteous workmen who were prompt and tidy. They protected our shrubs and plants well and cleaned up debris very well before they left. They even came on a Saturday to finish the job because it was going to rain on Sunday. We got a chuckle when we saw them haul out a microwave to heat their lunch. I recommend this company highly. Our three story house has some very difficult roof areas that did not daunt them. They did a superb job.

I had a difficult time choosing a contractor to re-roof our house, primarily because there was such huge disparity in the 3 bids I received. They ranged from $17,000to $60,000, with the middle bid made by Valentine Roofing at $28,000. Incredibly, those quotes seemed to be apples to apples, in terms of the materials to be used and services performed. All 3 of the bidding companies are good, reputable firms, and I believe that all of them would have done a good job. But I also believe that the devil is in the details, and I set out to determine which of them would do the best job, the highest quality work. After comparing the two higher bids, I determined that the company with the higher bid would not do an appreciably better job than Valentine, so I threw that bid out. I spent a lot of time on Valentine?s website, and spoke several times with Cody, the sales guy who made the bid. I also looked at installations Valentine had made over a period of time, and talked to 2 very satisfied customers. What I took away from all my research was that Valentine Roofing really is committed to doing things the right way ? using the best materials and practices, and doing everything possible to do a high quality job. They would replace every bit of flashing, use drip edge metal, install a better grade of underlayment than standard 30lb felt, leave permanent roof anchors for future use and do many other things that demonstrate their commitment to doing a very good job. The materials they proposed to use on the flat roof installation were much better than those spec?d, by the low bidder (and also the highest bidder!), and they came up with a solution to cap the parapet that no one else had proposed. Still, it was hard to justify spending $10,000 above the lowbid on intangibles like ?attention to detail.? On closer inspection I found that the low bidder did not spec the job the same as Valentine. They would not replace flashing around the 2 chimneys, use drip edge flashing or use a higher quality underlayment like Valentine. I asked the low bidder if he could adjust his bid to include the same materials Valentine would use, and perform the work in more or less the same manner, thinking he would still be substantially lower than Valentine. He made a higher bid (about $19,000) that more or less replicated Valentine?s specs, but I ultimately decided that he would not be accustomed to working at that level, and couldn?t do as good a job. I am really glad I chose Valentine Roofing. The crew, led by Nicholas, did a great job from top to bottom, working tremendously hard every day. Each of the seven or so crew members were focused on their work and unfailingly pleasant. They somehow managed to keep the grounds tidy, even in the midst of the tear-off onslaught. Those shingles and bits of roofing paper that they didn?t pick up during the day were always cleaned up before they left. It was easy to see that they were working methodically and with real precision as they began to lay the new roof. The finished roof looks really great and has withstood some very wet NW fall weather. There were a few bumps along the way. Valentine hired the local garbage collector to deliver the huge bins to remove all the waste from the tear-off. The idiot driver backed across a wet section of my lawn, leaving a 2 foot deep trough. Sallie, Valentine?s job manager, accepted responsibility for the sub contractor?s mistake and hired local gardeners to fix the problem. I really appreciated that she took responsibility and got the job done. In addition to the roof installation Valentine agreed to remove cedar siding shingles and re-apply the same materials on a 2 foot wall. It was a tricky installation, because a section of the wall is curved. I regret to say that Valentine?s installation was very far short of adequate, and had to be torn off and re-installed by another contractor. However, I do not regard this as a problem, because Sallie immediately acknowledged that the work had to be re-done by another contractor and adjusted the invoice accordingly. This issue had no effect on my judgment of Valentine Roofing?s ability to do superlative roofing work, because it was a job that really should have been assigned to a finish carpenter, not a roofer. I whole-heartedly recommend Valentine Roofing, and would hire them again without even thinking about it.
Description of Work: Valentine Roofing removed the existing cedar shingle roof and replaced it with Landmark Certainteed Premium composition roofing material. A new "smart vent" - essentially a long, horizontal slit that provides mid-roof intake air - was installed on one side of the house. Valentine also removed a 10 x 14' flat roof, replacing it with TPO. The curved parapet above the flat roof needed a new cap, which was made by a sheet metal sub-contractor and installed by Valentine. Additionally, I asked Valentine Roofing to remove the existing, somewhat mossy cedar shingles from the (vertical) wall below the parapet, and install new cedar shingles.

Valentine Roofing did an excellent job replacing our roof. The crew was professional and very attentive to detail. Clean-up was great...no nails or scraps to pickup after completion. The entire process was organized and professional. I highly recommend using Valentine for anyone looking to replace their roof.
