Oil-based paint takes 6 to 8 hours to dry on average, meaning that’s the minimum time needed between the last brush stroke and the first raindrop. While often used interchangeably, flat and matte paints are not the same. Flat paint has no gloss and is completely shine-free, while matte has up to 10% resin, giving it a slightly velvety appearance. That small amount of gloss in matte paint gives it a more elegant, modern appearance than flat paint, though flat paint is ideal for hiding imperfections in even the most dented, scratched, and repeatedly repaired surfaces.

The best time to paint gutters is when the weather forecast predicts clear skies and low humidity. High humidity will likely prolong dry time, and rainy or snowy conditions may ruin your hard work before it can cure. If you have no other option than to work in inclement weather, consider choosing paint with a faster dry time, like acrylic or latex, rather than one that takes a while, like oil paint.

Paint costs anywhere from $10 to $100 per gallon on average, depending on the type of paint, brand, quality, and more. Primer costs the least, while exterior paint tends to cost the most. Premium brands like Sherwin-Williams®, Benjamin Moore®, and Rust-Oleum® come in as the priciest paint brands, while Diamond Brite®, PPG-owned Glidden®, and Sherwin-Williams-owned Valspar® are some of the lowest-costing paints.
