"I hired John to give my house a smoke alarm makeover. He nailed it. He arrived on time, was friendly, and got to work. He kept me informed throughout the day, surfaced decisions to me when needed, and accommodated my preferences. He installed 3 new smoke alarms, a couple new smoke/CO alarms, and connected them all with each other and with my few remaining smoke and CO alarms. He even helped me out installing a new thermostat and cleaned up. The end result looks and works perfect."

"This guy knows what he is doing. He completed this job standing in the rain in a spot where he was getting slammed by water coming off roof - kept smiling! Great job! Will definitely use him again, very professional!"

"Joe’s Electrical was very professional and prompt. We were in a time crunch making sure our sugar house was ready for the first boil. Joe’s electric came and installed all of our sugaring equipment as well as lights throughout the sugar house and had the job completed in time for the sap to run! Since then we have called them back on several occasions to wire new pump houses, vacuum pumps, and generators. The service is always excellent!"

Generator Install questions, answered by experts

Setting up utilities on a vacant property usually takes at least a few months, or between 6 weeks to 16 weeks. This process requires working with the local planning and zoning department, hiring a building contractor or engineer to design the utility layout, securing permits, laying the lines, and connecting the utilities.

While the rating will tell you how many watts the refrigerator needs at the peak of its cycle, it requires additional wattage to start. At the bare minimum, you’ll need a 1,500-watt generator to get the fridge up and running after a blackout. A 2,000-watt generator should be sufficient for most home refrigerators.

If you’re deciding between a solar battery versus a generator for the best backup power solution, you can take a few factors into consideration. Solar batteries are quiet while generators can be quite loud. Generators have a lower up-front cost, but they require fuel and ongoing maintenance while solar batteries are more expensive but don’t have many ongoing costs.

In many cases, yes. There are models called dual-fuel generators and fuel switches, but only between certain types of fuel. For example, with the right setup you can convert a generator from natural gas to propane. Some allow switching between diesel and gasoline. There are even tri-fuel generators available in some cases, which adds a large layer of security if you are worried about fuel availability in times of crisis. Always check your generator capabilities and manual instructions before trying to switch fuels. Some generators can use another fuel but may need a fuel conversion kit to prep them first.

An undersized whole-house generator has the potential to overheat and shut down when you try to run a central AC system. This scenario can not only damage the whole-house generator, but can also trip your home’s breakers or cause electrical damage. To avoid this situation, hire a local generator installer to correctly size your whole-house generator.
