Q: Can I install solar panels by myself?

•

While you can install solar panels by yourself, it can be a complicated process full of lots of manual labor, risky roof work, and knowledge of electrical wiring. Most solar panel installation projects should be reserved for a trained professional—especially if you plan on connecting your panels to the electrical grid rather than for off-grid use, which doesn’t require utility services.

Q: Are flat or pitched roofs better for solar panels?

•

You can install solar panels on a flat or pitched roof, but keep in mind that they will need to rest at a 30- to 50-degree tilt for optimal sun absorption. It costs more to install solar panels on a flat roof because you will need to install a framing system and likely hire a structural engineer. If your roof has a pitch of more than 40 degrees, it may not be a good candidate for solar panels.

Q: Can you put solar on a tar and gravel roof?

•

Yes, it is possible to install solar panels on a tar and gravel roof, but it is not the ideal roofing material for a solar installation. The process requires roof penetrations to install the solar racking system. While installers will seal these penetrations, they still increase the risk of leaks. This risk is higher on tar and gravel roofs, which are often flat. Flat roofs are more prone to leaks than sloped roofs because they can pool water during heavy rain and hold snow for longer periods, exposing the roof to more moisture.

Q: How do I find a reputable solar panel company?

•

You can start narrowing your search for a reputable solar company by finding local, regional, and national companies that service your area and maintain positive reviews online. You should also check the Better Business Bureau’s (BBB) website to see if the company has complaints filed against them. Next, contact the remaining candidates and ask about installation timelines, warranty coverage, and financing options. Choose a company that offers a labor warranty that lasts at least 10 years and prioritizes cash purchases and solar loans.

Q: How hard is it to install solar panels by yourself?

•

DIY solar panel installations are hard to manage by yourself. You’ll likely need some help or prior experience to make the project worth the effort.

"Our panels are working flawlessly, producing electricity for our house and to power up a car for most of our driving. Trackers are great. They follow the sun and when vertical, they shed snow. Our neighbors have roof mounts. Their panels are covered for days after a snowstorm when ours are clear and working. It was a good decision. Solaflect is a wonderful company. They engineer and produce a superb system, install it well, and take good care of their customers."
