That is, prior to meeting Gabe and the folks at Top Notch. Not only are the competitively priced, but they send an actual roofing expert out for estimating, as opposed to a salesman. I immediately felt was in good hands as he answered all my questions with authority and knowledge. On the job site, the crew was clean, polite, and professional. We did have a few hiccups along the way, which as anyone who has ever done renovation can tell you, is par for the course. Seamless gutters last 20 years (or more) with proper maintenance. How long the gutters last depends on the material you choose. Vinyl gutters will only last for 10 to 15 years, whereas copper and zinc gutters can last 50 years or longer. Compared to sectional gutters, seamless gutters require far less maintenance and generally last longer.

One of the biggest causes of gutter leaks is clogged gutters. If your gutters are full of debris and leaves, water will back up and eventually overflow outside of the gutter. Other common causes of gutter leaks include loosened gutter fasteners, faulty gutter slopes (sagging gutters), separated joints, and cracks or holes.

Gutter guards work in heavy rain, but perhaps not as well. The main purpose of gutter guards is to protect your gutters from getting clogged with debris, which can be carried (or worsened) by heavy rain. However, a clogged gutter isn’t the only reason rain isn’t traveling through your gutter properly. Other reasons include roof shingles extending past your gutters, improperly installed gutters, or incorrect gutter sizes. 

If you suspect you have any of these other gutter issues, it may be more cost-effective to repair your gutters first and see if that solves the problem before investing in gutter guards.

In the Christmas days of yore, people braved winter weather to staple or tack their Christmas lights onto their rooftops or nearby surfaces like the fascia boards. Problems quickly emerged with that approach. Damage to the roof, even small marks from staples, provides entryways for moisture and similar issues that can hasten roof rot, wear, and associated leaks. Plus, some homes had tough fiber cement boards or other materials where staples and screws didn’t work.

While it’s possible to run a gutter for 30 to 40 feet without a downspout in some cases, you really should place a downspout every 20 feet. Too long of a gutter run without a downspout means that the downspouts you do have will more easily get overwhelmed since the gutters divert water from a larger portion of the roof to them.
