I returned home from a trip and found the house cold and the furnace putting out cold air. Since I have an annual maintenance contract with M. E. Flow, they sent a technician right away. The heat exchanger had failed and due to the age of the furnace, the exchanger was not reparable. M. E. Flow scheduled a new furnace installation for Dec 31. The installer came as scheduled in the morning and worked all day until the new furnace was installed and working. He removed the old furnace and hauled it away. The installer finished around 5 PM.

I left a voice mail saying that I was interested in remodeling two bathrooms, that he was recommended, and that I would like to speak with him about an estimate. I didn't know at the time that Tony had gone to work for Quinn's Home Improvement. Several weeks passed with no response from Tony. Finally, I received a call from Quinn. We invited him to come give us an estimate. He brought his designer, Amanda Pitts, with him to review the work. Even though we thought we might be moving, our bathrooms were dated, and we thought a remodel would help sell our current house. Over the next several weeks, Amanda worked closely with my wife picking out the vanities, tile, and fixtures. Once decided upon, we signed a contract for Quinn's to do the work. We were told by Amanda that the work would take 1 1/2 weeks, and that we would need to stay elsewhere during during that time. My wife told Amanda that she didn't want the work to begin until it could be completed without interruption. In the meantime, my wife and I closed on another house. Amanda asked my wife if she would want to downgrade some of the fixtures since we were moving to save money. Amanda said that Quinn was agreeable to that if we liked. My wife agreed. The work was to begin on Monday, Sept. 2, but after a phone call from Amanda, it was re-scheduled to begin the next morning - Tues., Sept. 3. Once the work crew arrived, my wife and I went and stayed with family for the next five days. That following Friday Amanda called my wife and told her that the work would be finished the next Thursday. After five days of work, both bathrooms had only been taken down to the studs. The ceiling was not removed. Plastic had been installed to block the work area(s) off from the rest of the house. On Monday, no one showed up to work. On Tuesday no one showed up until 4 PM. On Wednesday no one showed up until 2 PM. We discovered that the crew had been pulled off our job to work another job site. Steamed, I personally phoned Quinn to ask what was going on! He promised to get the crew back on my job. In the meantime, My wife and I were staying in a local hotel at our expense and living out of a suitcase. Of course the work was not complete on Thursday as promised. In fact, Amanda stopped responding to phone calls or emails. Instead, we began dealing with Loran, who would relay Amanda's messages... or not! It was along this time that the plastic barrier was removed inside the house. As a result, dust from sanding drywall spread to every room and coated all of our belongings. It clogged our HVAC filter, which has to be changed twice. The trim paint on the woodwork in several doorways was chipped off as the result of bringing in materials and/or removing debris. Tape used to hold down construction paper on the floor left marks along the hardwood flooring where it was attached. Grass was killed in the front yard where they left their trailer sitting for so long, as well as in the backyard where someone dumped paint. The tile in one bathroom did not go all the way up to the ceiling as agreed, nor was it orientated correctly - horizontal instead of vertical. Shutters for one bathroom window were never installed, and the contracted 'cubbie' to hold soap and shampoo was not initially installed until we said something about it. Instead of it being tiled, it was simply boxed in with some composite materials and painted. The fixtures were, indeed, downgraded, and we were given a price break in the amount of $1200, then charged $850 +- for them replacing "damaged" plumbing and water damaged sub-flooring beneath the tub. (Plumbing cost to upgrade to current code was figured in the initial estimate. We were not going to pay twice!) It took four weeks to complete this job! It was two weeks before there was a single flush toilet installed that worked. We had to move prematurely into our new house and sleep on an air mattress in order to have a complete working bathroom. I don't know what we would have done otherwise. My wife and I feel that our home was disrespected by these workers, and that they treated it like a dump! We had to hand wash every piece of furniture we removed, as well as clothing and other personal items. I had to paint the damaged trim, and try as she might, my wife could never remove the strip from the tape on the hardwood floor. Quinn did meet with us at the house to his credit, and he was agreeable to cost adjustments. We have closed this chapter. However, I doubt Quinn's Home Improvement will ever be hired by us again, nor would I recommend them to others. We had a great experience with Commonwealth! They were very professional, detailed oriented and prompt. We weren't familiar with the details of mold reports and Kelly was extremely helpful in explaining the process and the results. They don't have any "skin in the game" to find mold,...

Lead Testing and Removal questions, answered by experts
Lead toxicity comes from inhaling lead or consuming it. Before the 1980s, when the government banned lead from consumer use, it could be found in paint, plumbing, pipes, ceramics, and even gasoline. Lead paint is toxic for the same reason lead itself is toxic, which is why lead poisoning from paint presents the same as lead poisoning from water or food sources, with a slight increase in respiratory symptoms vs. digestive symptoms. Lead paint is most dangerous when it’s old and peeling, cracking, or otherwise disturbed. This increases the concentration in the air and, therefore, in breathable air.
Iron sediments from rusty pipes are not likely to cause health problems. While a glass of yellow-hued water is off-putting, it is generally safe to drink yellow water in the short term. But you certainly want to address this problem. In the meantime, switching to bottled water until the yellow water issue is resolved is a good idea.
You can paint over lead paint, or “encapsulate” it with a special paint that includes an ingredient called an encapsulant. The EPA approves encapsulation as a lead paint removal method as long as the paint remains undisturbed. Standard types of paint without an “encapsulant” from the big box stores or hardware stores do not meet EPA standards for remediation of lead-based paint.
If your house was built before 1978 and you’re noticing cracking or peeling paint, a lead paint inspection is a good idea. A lead paint inspection gives you accurate information about the presence, location, and condition of lead-based paint in your home. This information is essential for making informed decisions about lead paint removal to ensure your safety and health and that of your family. If your inspector finds lead, you’ll need to take steps to manage or remove the lead-based paint and comply with laws and regulations.
Through air sampling devices and surface swabs in key areas of concern.
