The contractor diagnosed that the problem as a bad connection in the circuit and they had to reconnect the circuit. A few days later it stopped working again and it was discovered that the thermostat just needed more batteries. There haven't been any further issues.
This contractor (Richard Clayton) runs his business out of his home, doesn't have an office staff that I'm aware of, doesn't necessarily use standard billing practices nor is he very professional when it comes dealing with customers (especially post-mortem).
I will admit that I was initially at fault for not getting this contractor's $160 bill paid in a timely manner because I lost the original invoice. My experience with other contractors, that I work with, is that they would have sent me another invoice the following month if I missed the billed invoice (which doesn't happen often). This contractor never sent another invoice. Because I deal with numerous contractors on a monthly basis managing various properties, I could not figure out who I sent out to fix the issue and attempted to locate the contractor that resolved this by calling a list of contractors that I had including some on Angie's list but had no success. Since I was unsuccessful in locating the contractor in my attempts, I decided that eventually someone would reach out to me once they discovered that the bill hadn't been paid. About 2 months later, I received a rather strange voice mail from Richard asking if I had an issue with the service or if I was mad at him and that's why I was purposefully withholding payment. Up to this point, the only contact I had experienced with him was setting up the appointments for the repair. My intentions were to make the payment immediately and were to never withhold payment so I was surprised that I was being accused of purposefully withholding payment and that it took nearly 60 days for any follow up from him.
I called Richard back that day and asked if he could email me the invoice again and told him that I would be happy to make the payment immediately. He said that he couldn't email it to me, would have to return to his office, locate his copy of the bill, and physically deliver another copy of it to me. I let him know that I was going to be heading out of town for a few days so if he could deliver the invoice that day or the following day, I'd be able to get him payment immediately. As a way to make it easier, I even offered to pay over the phone with a credit card once I had the invoice in hand so emailing it to me would be the most expeditious method to get the payment issue resolved. Richard seemed to be disgruntled over the fact that I had lost the invoice, told me that he would have to locate the invoice again in order to get it to me whilst complaining about people who don't pay their bills.
I was expecting to have the copy of the invoice delivered before I left on vacation but it was never delivered. However, while on vacation, I was notified by my office that an electrical contractor came into the office to deliver an invoice, demanded a credit card number to charge immediately, ranted about the poor response of making payment, mentioned how he'll never do business with our office again, and will let everyone know how we do business. One of my office associates had to get involved because other staff members were feeling threatened by Richard and his unprofessional outburst in the office. I was shocked to hear about the situation and the threatening behavior all over a bill that I would have gladly taken care of much earlier. The very day that I returned from vacation, I personally hand delivered the payment to the contractor's office/home since I didn't think that he could take a payment over the phone.
Yes, its my fault for losing the original invoice and I have empathy and understanding for his frustration but his behavior was unacceptable. I have found this contractor isn't good at handling situations requiring some accommodation. This contractor is outdated in business processes, doesn't capitalize on the great technologies of today, is in need of an office with an office staff knowledgeable in assisting customers with their needs (specifically handling this unnecessary situation), and is unprofessional in how he deals with customers. I don't recommend him.
