Chimney Sweep Pros

I'm a full-time firefighter at Hopkins County Fire Department. I've swept chimneys for close to 4 years. I bought the business 8 months ago trying to grow the business to provide customers more choices of services. The point of a chimney sweep is to remove soot, blockages and built up creosote from your chimney liner, firebox, smoke chamber, and damper. This cleaning will help create a safer operation of your system while heated. As a firefighter I have seen chimney fires first hand and advise people to not be blind sided from this hidden issue. I enjoy my job and meeting new customers. I take pride in my job making sure the job gets done right. I welcome the opportunity to serve you in the future.

Chimney Caps questions, answered by experts

While it’s technically possible to repoint a chimney without scaffolding, it’s not recommended, especially for taller chimneys. Scaffolding provides a stable platform that allows for safer and more precise work. Without it, you might find yourself in a risky situation, and the quality of the repointing could suffer.

A chimney cap costs about $300 on average. The prices range from about $75 to $1,000, depending on the material, size, any repairs needed, and if your chimney cap requires custom fabrication. Chimney caps are usually made from galvanized steel, copper, or stainless steel. Additional costs may include hiring a chimney sweep to clean the chimney before a cap is installed.

Unfortunately, there’s no definitive answer to this question, but the wind rating of your shingles will give you a good idea of what wind speeds can damage your roof. If you’re concerned about damage, inspect your roof following windy conditions to look for signs of wind damage to your shingles. When in doubt, consider hiring a professional who fixes roofs to carry out an expert inspection. Remember that hurricanes, tropical storms, and tornadoes are likely to cause the most damage, but even severe thunderstorms can bring winds that compromise your roofing system.

It is not always necessary to put wood stripping (also called furring strips) under a metal roof, but some metal roofs require stripping to work efficiently. For example, you must use furring strips when installing metal over shingles in order to connect the shingles to the metal roofing. These strips are made of metal or wood. They create thermal breaks and provide a solid frame to which you can attach the metal roofing. A lack of wood stripping can cause condensation issues under certain roofs, so use the roofing manufacturer’s specifications as your guide.

Properly maintained roof decking can last between 20 and 30 years on average, though it varies based on a few factors. Mainly, the quality of roof decking materials and environmental conditions have the most impact on longevity. You can extend its lifespan by regularly inspecting your roof and making repairs as necessary.
