I was, at first, less than impressed with Terra. The A/C unit they had quoted in the estimate was "unavailable" for at least a month. Terra tried to sell me a brand of A/C I'd never heard of at the same price as the Rudd they'd quoted me. I informed them that this was a bait and switch and I wouldn't put up with it. Terra came back with a proposal for a slightly larger Rudd brand unit that they had on hand for a greater cost. I agreed and work started within the week on installation. Terra got both units totally installed and working in only two days. This pleased me. Two workmen were present, both spoke English, but one spoke it much more fluently than the other. I was asked for input several times, which made me very happy as I was able to get one of the fan coils rotated so that pipes wouldn't be in a walkway. I was not at all pleased that the new, larger, Rudd fan coil unit did not fit on the preexisting cement pad. Terra offered no help in pouring or adjusting the cement pad. In fact, the installer was perfectly willing to let it dangle in space by four inches. When I said that was unacceptable we both went looking for a base. We found a cement block which the technician jammed under the edge of the unit. The unit was now uneven by over an inch. The technician was fine with this, which was SERIOUSLY unprofessional. I may not know much about A/C units, but I strongly suspect they ought to be level. I finally (temporarily) solved the problem by using scrap wood to brace up the side to the correct height. Terra said that when I get around to expanding the cement base they'd lift the unit, not move it so I can re-pour the entire base, mind, but lift it temporarily. Also, one of the technicians built an air return over a hole in the drywall. No patching, no coming to get me so that I could patch it myself, he just built the return. He didn't seem to see any problem with air rushing into the inside of the walls. He said, "You were supposed to handle dry wall." Yeah. Very typical craftsmanship for South Texas. This is why I am not rating them higher. They did what they said they would do and not a single bit more. In conclusion, I would recommend them, but only if you are willing to stand there and WATCH them work. They cannot be trusted to do a quality job unsupervised. However, if you are physically present and know what the work OUGHT to look like so you can correct mistakes, Terra is a good company. We had been out for the night visiting a relative and returned the next day to a broken sliding patio door. Someone had kicked/pushed the glass off its frame to enter the home. By pushing in the glass on the sliding door, it avoided tripping the alarm door sensor. Fortunately, however, the trespasser managed to trip the motion sensor forcing him/her to leave empty handed. At this point, we had two choices. One, we could place the glass back on the door frame with silicon and risk a repeat of the incident. Two, we could replace the door with a French door so that door entry sensor couldn't be easily bypassed. We chose the second option. The next day, we were in the market for a contractor to handle the work. I called about five companies and the lowest quote we received was about $1,200.00 for materials, the removal of the old door and installation of the new one. Through our business of renting homes, we heard about one of our tenant's relative, Julio Johnson, and decided to give him a call. Mr. Johnson is a licensed general contractor and has 32 years of construction experience. He arrived 15 minutes early!!! on a Sunday morning!!! to quote the installation of the new patio door. He sat us down and explained the amount of work that had to be done. Apparently, the doors that were used in 1977 (when this home was built) heights didn't match up with the heights of the new French doors available at Lowes and Home Depot. The difference was a 2" height, and he explained that he would have to adjust the door frame to allow the new sized door. I have to admit, as he was talking, it started to make sense why other companies were charging well over a thousand to do the job. Well, long story shot, he quoted us $550.00 for the supplies and installation. Mr. Johnson did an amazing job. The new door looks like it was built with the home. The finish on the wood work, paint and the overall installation make it obvious that he has a passion for this kind of work."},"url":"https://www.angi.com/companylist/us/tx/mcallen/south-texas-home-renovations-llc-reviews-7495716.htm"},"position":4},{"@type":"ListItem","item":{"@type":"LocalBusiness","name":"A & E Lawn & Tree Trimming Svc","address":{"@type":"PostalAddress","addressRegion":"TX","addressCountry":"US"},"review":{"@type":"Review","author":{"@type":"Person","name":"David M."},"reviewBody":"Erasmo Ramirez, head of A and E, is extremely knowledgeable, friendly, punctual, and professional. Years ago, after being disappointed with the performance of other tree-trimming companies, I decided to call A and E (I knew they trimmed the trees of our neighbor across the street), and I was so impressed by the experience that I've used no one else for tree trimming since. After my son was born (three years ago), I was pressed for time, so I decided to use A and E to take over the maintainance of our lawn as well as our trees--and I was glad that bi-weekly was an option. Long lawn-based talks with Erasmo also led to me using A and E whenever something goes wrong with our irrigation system, too. He knows who I am whenever I call, he follows up a.s.a.p. (usually within a day), and the workmanship is excellent. ... Here's a side note: a few days ago, when A and E were cutting my lawn, a stone was flung from a weed-whacker into one of our french doors, spider-webbing the entirety of the shatter-proof glass. An unfortunate accident. Erasmo, however, took care of it, and the glass was replaced the next day. Normally I'd fear weeks of empty promises and ensuing headaches; instead, 24 hours later, it was as if nothing bad had ever happened. I just acquired two 500 sq. ft. apts. They needed new A/C systems. I'd had about 5 different estimates done and, due to some tricky duct work, most of them recommended re-ducting the apartments or knocking holes in the (brick) walls so that a different style of unit could be installed. The...

Glass Block questions, answered by experts
Options include tempered, laminated, and tinted glass for various needs.
DIY is possible for small projects, but professional installation ensures proper sealing, structural integrity, and a precise finish.
Heavy glass tends to be more expensive than thin glass because it is stronger and more durable. In most cases, ¼-inch-thick glass is ideal for mirrors, and ⅛-inch-thick glass is ideal for residential windows. Heavier glass isn’t always necessary, and can be more challenging to hang or install. Work with a local window installation pro for replacement or new construction windows.

Energy efficient
Sealed to prevent drafts
Aesthetically pleasing
Strong and secure
Cons

Challenging installation
Challenging repair
Glass blocks are much thicker than glass panes in traditional windows and serve as better insulators. The overall glass block window is sealed against drafts that allow warm or cool air to escape, saving on energy costs. Since this type of window is sealed airtight into your home, you don’t have to worry about air leaks and drafts as often as traditional windows that open and close. When installing glass block windows, look for options that are Energy Star rated, proving their energy efficiency.
