"Called for free estimate and Alex responded. He gave me the options for repair and did not pressure me into a decuson. He let me make the choice. The communication was excellent. A crew of 8 showed up and worked all day completing the project. They were polite and cleaned up after the job was completed. I checked around and found their estimates to be the best with about the same guarantees. This was a very pleasant experience. Now my doors don't gap and close nicely. Thanks Groundworks."

Windows questions, answered by experts

Water leakage through window openings is much more common in older homes, but it can also create issues with window frames that are improperly installed. If left unattended, water buildup can cause damage to surrounding fixtures, lead to harmful mold, and compromise the architectural integrity of your home. The potential damage that a water leak poses makes investing in weather- and water-proofing your window frames entirely worthwhile.

Yes, you can enlarge windows in a brick house. Your masonry contractor will need to cut away exterior brick to make space for the larger window, and you may also need to consult a structural engineer to make sure the window is properly supported inside the frame of the house.

If you live in a colder region, consider installing double- or triple-pane windows with low-E coatings, which can trap heat and keep your house warm. In hot areas, windows with reflective coatings and insulated frames help keep cooling costs down. If you experience a lot of extreme weather, then impact-resistant glass might be a worthwhile investment.

Look for stickers at the top or inside of the frame, like in the tracks when the window is open. Some brands also stamp their name onto the frame itself or place it between the panes of glass, although this is less common. If you can’t find the info on the window itself, consider asking your neighbors or HOA.

Insulating windows with plastic works, but it can be time-consuming, and the end results can—and often do—end up lacking in aesthetics. Window film and caulking your windows to make sure there are no drafts are two options that increase the energy efficiency of your home in a low-cost way. Plastic can be a good strategy while you consider alternatives.
