Buried downspouts can freeze during cold weather as cold water runs through them. If you’ve discovered your downspouts are frozen, you can carefully pour hot water down the top of the downspout to defrost them. If that doesn’t work, you may need to dig your downspout back up. Water backing up under the shingles can rot the edge of your roofline. Overflow water falling next to your foundation can end up leaking into your basement or crawl space.

While not technically required, it’s a good idea. Replacing gutters, especially if they’re getting on in years, can sometimes even cost less than reinstalling existing gutters. The cost to replace or install gutters comes down to the size of your roof, the material costs, and the cost of labor in your area.

The most common size for PVC pipe on gutter drains is 4 inches in diameter. However, 3-inch pipes can also work, depending on your specific gutter system. The ideal PVC size depends on how much water your gutter collects, its length, and its size.

It’s technically possible to remove some soffit material without removing your gutters, but it’s usually a good idea to remove gutters, fascia, and soffit and then reinstall them in the opposite order. Replacing soffits without removing gutters is likely to leave you with a less professional and clean appearance, and you’re more likely to do damage to your gutters and fascia boards in the process.
