"We had a great experience with this asphalt paving company from start to finish. They were professional, on time, and very easy to communicate with. The crew worked efficiently and paid attention to detail, making sure everything was done right and cleaned up afterward. The driveway looks smooth, solid, and completely transformed the front of our home. They explained the process clearly and delivered exactly what they promised—no surprises, just quality work. We would definitely recommend them to anyone looking for reliable and high-quality paving work."

"I have dealt with a lot of contractors over the years but none have been as thorough and professional as Chip! It was a pleasure working with him. Fantastic job at a price I couldn’t pass on. Chip and crew has a work ethic I haven’t seen in a long time. If you need some work done give Chip a call. He delivers great results at a fair price and the finished results are incredible."

"Hired Jim and his crew to overlay our driveway. Jims price was very reasonable. We reviewed the issues I had with our current driveway and Jim advised the overlay would resolve. Overlay looks amazing, and we are happy with job however we have 1 issue pending, an area Jim said would be resolved. I have called left messages and sent texts and now I can not get him or anyone to respond. Disappointed"

"My job involved major exterior renovation to my home which required several sub-contractors. In addition, my old driveway was torn up and replaced and additional concrete poured on the side of the house. Eric always returned phone calls, was responsive to my needs, and was easy to work with."

"I entered the job request in this site and not 5 minutes later Courtnay called to sestup a time to inspect the job site for a bid. Our job was very complicated involving not just my driveway but two sections of private road shared with neighbors requiring three different bids. I watched his crew worked and they were a well coordinated team doing the job with speed and efficiency of a well oiled machiine. The most impressive thing about this job was the customer service he provided despite a family trauma that pulled him out of town constantly we never felt like we were ignored or treated unfairly. The only reason I didn't give this company a full 5 starts is that the job took an extra day because they ran out of material on the second day. His patience in working with me and the rest of our neighborhood are commendable. If I need anymore work like this done I'm calling them back and I will recommend this company to anyone."

Asphalt Driveways questions, answered by experts

It’s best to weigh the pros and cons of each material and decide on your priorities for your driveway. Gravel won’t be an appropriate choice if your driveway experiences heavy traffic. You’ll find that you need to level and top it off regularly, which could make the material a much more expensive option.

The choice between asphalt and concrete depends on your priorities, budget, and climate.

Concrete is generally more durable, lasting up to 50 years with minimal upkeep, and offers more customization options like staining and stamping, which can add more to a home's value. However, it is more expensive upfront and can be prone to cracking in cold climates where water can freeze and expand.

Asphalt is typically cheaper and quicker to install and is easier to repair. It performs better in colder climates. However, it requires more maintenance, including regular resealing, has a shorter lifespan, and can get hot and sticky in intense sunlight.

Ultimately, if durability and long-term value are key, concrete is often the better choice. If upfront cost and performance in cold weather are more important, asphalt may be preferable.

Three inches is a great thickness for a residential asphalt driveway that sees minimal to moderate traffic from cars, SUVs, and pickup trucks. However, a thicker driveway can better withstand the weight of a heavier vehicle, such as a trailer or a recreational vehicle. If you drive a heavy vehicle on a thin driveway, you risk cracking and damaging it.

Building a road on a slope requires careful planning and will normally require a drainage system underneath to prevent flooding and damage to the road over time. Your professional may lengthen your road to create switchbacks if the slope directly to your home is too steep, as there are regulations for maximum road slope. The drainage system will help prevent runoff from the higher side of the slope from damaging the asphalt or concrete. Keep in mind that building a road on a slope isn’t a good DIY project, as a lot can go wrong.

While blacktop is a type of asphalt, the terms should not be used interchangeably, as not all asphalt qualifies as blacktop. The primary differences are in their composition, production process, and ideal applications. Blacktop contains more stone than other types of asphalt and is heated to a higher temperature during production—300°F or more—while hot-mix asphalt is heated to between 275°F and 300°F. The ratio of bitumen (a tar-like crude oil) is a key differentiator, though sources vary: some state blacktop has less bitumen, making it less durable, while others claim it has a higher ratio. Due to these differences, asphalt is generally more durable and better for high-traffic areas like highways and streets, while blacktop is more suitable for playgrounds and residential driveways. For a driveway project, it is best to consult a professional to determine the most appropriate material.
