You do not have to dig footers for a deck as long as it meets local code and holds up to weather in your area. Trenching is not the same as boring. Boring uses a drill to make a tunnel for underground utilities, but trenching involves digging with an excavator, trencher, backhoe, or shovel. Begin by adding a light layer of water and observing how long the soil retains moisture.
