"I had him install my coffee bar with countertop in my dining room, he did an exceptional job! My walls were very crooked and I didn't want any backslash, he perfectly scribed the top and trimed the cabinets so that you wouldn't even notice that the wall was off! Would definitely hire again for any other future jobs"

Install Stair Railings questions, answered by experts

Many contractors offer staircase services, but you can also find stair companies that are dedicated exclusively to staircase installation and makeovers. If you’re planning a more elaborate design, search for reputable stair building contractors who will provide estimates, detailed project drawings, and superior finished products. You might pay a little more for this specialized labor, but it’s often worth the added investment.

Key signs that a railing or staircase needs replacement relate to instability, visible damage, and component failure. Check for any wobbling, creaking, or looseness when you apply weight. Visually inspect for cracks, splits, and damaged or missing balusters or spindles. For exterior deck railings, also look for specific signs of weather damage like visible rot, warping, and rusted hardware. Additionally, any railing that is outdated and does not meet current building codes should be replaced to ensure safety and prevent falls.

Always wear safety goggles to protect your eyes from flying debris, especially when cutting or drilling. Work gloves are also essential for gripping tools and handling sharp or splintered materials. If you’re working on a second-story deck or near an edge, consider wearing a safety harness. Hearing protection is a smart choice when using power tools, and steel-toe boots can prevent injuries from dropped materials.

The overhang, or nosing, of deck steps is another area that will be covered in building code requirements. The noses on your deck steps should have a minimum overhang of ¾ inch. For safety, usability, and code compliance, the nosing of deck steps should not extend past 1¼ inches.

If you're looking to update your stairway by replacing your carpet, the cost to change carpet stairs to hardwood stairs is between $75 and $200 per stair if you’re installing brand-new wood flooring. If you already have usable wood underneath your carpets, expect to pay between $100 and $300 to remove the carpet. However, even with existing wood on your staircase, your overall costs will increase if you need to refinish and stain the wood.
