"I hired Jeff Carroll from K + L Tree And Design to run a french drain down the side of our house and across our backyard. Plus we found some issues with our irrigation system where it was leaking into the ground and needed to be repaired. What started out as what seemed as an easy job turned into a long drawn out mess. We started the process in March which should have only taken maybe a week or so of total time, ended up getting to August and my job still is not complete. With numerous excuses for not showing up and delaying my job between having another job lined up, equipment needed repair, his personal vacation, health issues, etc. It was literally one excuse after another while my job sat uncomplete. I still have gravel sitting in my front yard because he hasn’t come to finish the job with the irrigation system. BUT the biggest issue of it all is he STOLE money from me. With the closing of our house we were given some money though the closing of the house to use on landscaping, but the lawyer had to pay Jeff the money. Jeff said once the job was done, I could pay him, and then he would write me a check for the money when I handed him the check from the lawyer. He wrote me a bogus check and its been over two months of more excuses as to why he can’t get me another check. I would not recommend hiring K + L Tree And Design. Its been the worst experience and I will have to go to court to try and get my money back."

However, it’s important to avoid over-mulching or piling the mulch up around the trunk of a tree, a practice notoriously called “volcano mulching.” That piled mulch can increase the chances of rot and disease on the tree trunk as well as overwhelming the soil, which needs access to a certain amount of air. Topped trees have it hard enough: mulch sparingly while they heal.

Mulch costs anywhere from $30 to $150 per cubic yard, depending on the type you choose. On the inexpensive end, red and black mulch are about $35 to $40 per cubic yard, and are typically made from recycled waste wood like shredded old pallets or deck material. Cedar, cypress, and rubber mulch cost anywhere from $100 to $120 per cubic yard. A pro can help you determine the type of mulch most suitable for your landscaping needs.

Gravel’s biggest pro is its cost-effectiveness. For example, a gravel road or driveway is much more affordable than its asphalt counterpart. Gravel is also much less expensive than the cost of pouring a concrete slab if you’re building a patio or similar structure.

However, regarding comfort and convenience, gravel is far less foot-friendly than smoother substances like concrete or asphalt. It’s also more of a challenge to drive on and may kick up dust, resulting in the inevitable need for extra car washes. Lastly, there’s a chance it might move with rain or snow.

While you don’t need to put anything down before mulch, you can apply a pre-emergent herbicide to prevent weed growth. As long as you remove weeds before you spread mulch, you should be in the clear. But a herbicide is something that you can put down before mulch as an extra layer of protection.

That depends on the number of cubic feet in each bag. Ten 2-cubic-foot bags of mulch will cover 20 cubic feet, while 10 3-cubic-foot bags of mulch will cover 30 cubic feet.
