"I would definitely recommend this company for garage door work. Ronen, the man who came to fix it was very precise and exacting in what he wanted for an outcome of the repair. He wanted it done perfectly so that when the garage door opened or closed it was completely aligned, largely silent in its movement, and when it reached the bottom there wasn't a hint of sunlight coming in from the ground. He knows his craft very well and was enjoyable to deal with as a person. I would definitely call him again for any future work."

Door Repair questions, answered by experts

Exposure to moisture leads to door jamb rot. Water softens the wood, leaving it susceptible to damage from even slight bumps. Over time, the excess moisture allows mold, mildew, and fungus to grow. These organisms feed on the wood, leaving behind a soft, splintering door jamb. The breakdown will continue if the wood isn’t repaired or replaced. Outdoor wood jambs are the most prone to rotting, but bathrooms and doorways in a humid climate can sustain this damage.

Most of the time, a squeaky door is the result of dry hinges, where metal parts rub together without enough lubrication. Dirt, dust, or rust can also build up inside the hinge and add to the friction. Loose screws or slight misalignment can shift things just enough to create that irritating squeaking noise. Worn-out hinges or swelling wood from humidity changes can also be part of the problem on older doors. A good cleaning and proper lubrication usually take care of it, but if the squeak sticks around, it’s worth checking for bigger issues with the hinges or alignment.

While applying a small amount of olive oil to a door hinge may not cause problems, regularly using olive oil or vegetable oil can cause door hinges to become sticky and gummed up over time. Additionally, residue from food-grade products can actually turn rancid.

To maintain a sliding door for smooth operation and longevity, regularly clean the tracks, lubricate all moving parts and mechanisms, and inspect for any signs of wear.

You can open up more space between the door and the floor by sanding the bottom of the door, but it will take longer compared to using a hand planer. However, you could use a belt sander, which some believe is even better than a hand planer for planing a door. Also, it could leave a smoother finish on the bottom of the door.
