Do not let yourself be pressured into paying for a home appraisal or mortgage application until contract negotiations with the home seller are finalized and you are sure you will purchase the home. I was encouraged by my agent and mortgage lender to move forward with the aforementioned paperwork at a cost of $450.00. In the end, I did not buy the house and lost the $450.00. Suntrust Mortgage did nothing wrong legally, but in my opinion they failed ethically by not protecting the interests and assets of the customer.

People have to be careful about mortgage companies that charge for items that have nothing to do with a mortgage like identity theft protection.
