Best, most solid, well built new home I’ve ever set foot in. In fairness, I waited over a year to provide this evaluation to provide honest objective commentary, to be sure my opinion did not change after living in the home for a time and after the initial excitement wore off. I'm type A when it comes to my home and large expenditures. We designed a handicapped accessible country home where we hope to spend the rest of our lives. Kevin Sterner took that design and exceeded our high expectations, providing us with a home we will be comfortable in and can be proud of. I regularly viewed every aspect of the build process and was impressed with his techniques and all that went under the skin for a solid build. I did significant research on building and construction standards and found him to meet those that couldn’t be exceeded and exceed those that could be. Our cabinet and kitchen subcontractors commented on how square the rooms are and how easy it was to install cabinetry. They recalled a previous project they did for him with similar quality and noted his work was unique in that regard. ALL other subcontractors commented similarly on Kevin's high standards and quality, many having seen other projects of his. It was gratifying to hear this from high-end subcontractors most of whom we selected. Advice to those considering a project.... DO: - expect to pay a bit more than your average contractor. - expect to get top quality from an honest, up-front contractor. - expect to have a product you'll likely be happy with 50 years later. DON'T: - expect to get schmoozed just to get the contract. Kevin is straight forward, no-nonsense. - ask him to compromise on building standards. - expect him to build a custom home in three months.

The best quality work I have ever had done in my home. I am a very detail oriented and hard to please person. I could not find one single flaw in Kevin's work (and believe me I looked hard)! All joints were perfectly cut. Best trim work I have ever seen. Kevin is a true craftsman. You get what you pay for. I have hired over a dozen people over the past 25 years and Kevin has done the best work by a large margin. I won't hire anybody else for future projects.
Description of Work: Install old barn siding in Dining Room on 3 walls. Job included background painting of walls to match siding (knot holes, etc. allow you to see through some spots). Installing siding with random joints (butt joints). Rip down some siding to fabricate crown, base and corner moldings. Stain cut edges to match siding weathered finish. Some drywall work and finish molding in open doorways to adjacent rooms.

The job was completed. When I got the bill and called about not being notified of the tremendous price increase I was told that I should have known the price would be more than the original quote. I responded that I thought it would be but not 2500 more. After all I'm not a carpenter and have no idea what things cost. This business has done work for me in the past and that is why I hired them They were a little more pricey than othersbut I gave them the business anyway. Ended on a very bad note. I will never reccomend them to anyone again as I feel a huge lack of professionalism occurred here. The carpenter told me what the materials cost and after figuring it out the two were making 100 dollars an hour for 2 and a half days. The job was completed and believe me there was nothing fancy about it. I guess the time also included their lunch break.
Description of Work: Original estimate 1050 to replace rotted porch boards in 2013. Couldn't finish job due to weather last year. Job was more than expected in estimate.Worked 2 and a half days with some staining of wood done off site.Finished project without notifying me of a 3 and a half times increase in price. Never mentioned that the final cost would be 3500. I could have gotten several other people to do this cheaper. Was not anything fancy.

Response from Sterner & Sterner Residential Construction, Inc.
This client has not presented the facts accurately as I will attempt to clear up here, nor have they explained our willingness to work with them on this, which I expressed to her on the phone. First, the statement that the original estimate was 1050 for the work which was completed is completely misleading & incorrect. The 1050 number, as I explained to her, was an estimate a year ago to replace a few pcs. of bad decking then, not an estimate to replace all the decking on the entire deck. The job couldn’t be finished due to the fact that she did not want us working around the open pool to avoid as much debris getting into it as possible. The weather, although very warm, on that side of the house, did not keep us from finishing anything as we work year round in the weather. When we completed the repairs last year to her satisfaction & discussed full replacement for later, we were very clear to her that it was going to be an involved project & that it could take a week due partly to the fact that the decking goes under the rail posts. Getting the old decking out & installing new & re-attaching the post was very time consuming, and that was explained to her last year. I will also point out that the replacement took us less than the week we anticipated it would, which saved her money. This is despite the fact that she did not permit us to store materials there & we had to take them back to our shop to store in order to keep them out of the rain. This of course took extra time, off site, as well. When she received the invoice last year for the repairs of a very small portion, she did not complain or question it, nor did she ask us to provide her with an estimate for the entire decking replacement. We treated her fairly then & we treated her fairly this time as well, only billing for materials & hours worked. The 2-1/2 day worked comment, again does not give the full accurate picture as I also explained to her. Yes, this is the time (actually 2-3/4 days) that we were on the job making the repairs, but it does not count the hours of making a trip to the job to measure materials needed, ordering & picking up that material, off site staining of material & mobilization of equipment specific to the project that needed to be loaded & unloaded. Again, this was explained to her on the phone, before she wrote this review. It is worth noting that the location of the project was around the back of the house, through a gate & up ladders for access. This is not a problem but does take additional time. Lastly, the comment about making 100 dollars an hour is obviously out of line as that is not at all the case, especially considering the actual amount of work involved as described above. It’s also worth mentioning that in addition to replacing the decking, we cleaned out all the debris below the deck, opened up a clogged gutter near the deck that was not draining (as a result of tree debris around the house) & we accommodated a request by her gardener to supply & install some screw hooks for a pc. of shrubbery to be tied to. It is unfortunate that this customer felt it necessary to come to this venue to inaccurately portray the facts of this experience, especially since we did indeed respond to her concerns immediately & offered for her to pay only what she was comfortable with.

Kevin Sterner and his brother did excellent work for us. They removed a single entry door, widened the space, installed an entry door with double side lights, new electrical work for porch lights, barn beams (from an 1800's barn) for decorative purposes in the family room (cathedral ceiling). They are very professional, extremely clean, prompt, and personable. | |Our house was broken into about a year after they installed the new front door (to no fault of theirs). The criminals smashed out the door glass with a large rock. We immediately called Kevin to come out and replace the entire door unit as we felt we needed a more secure entry door. He returned, did a wonderful job on the replacement and only had trouble removing the entry door unit he originally installed because the work was done so well it should have lasted for centuries! The Sterner and Sterner team replaced this door unit with the same professionalism, quality, cleanliness, and timeliness. He was also very understanding and supportive of our situation and reassured us with the new door unit install. | |Sterner and Sterner is an honest company, owned and operated by dedicated, honest Christians who truly have the best interested of their clients at heart. We received several estimates that ranges all over the board and Sterner and Sterner was somewhere in the middle. I wouldn't hesitate to hire this team again.
