OpenSky Energy helped me out after another company that had installed solar panels on my roof went bankrupt before connecting them to the grid. Open Sky did the connection on time, on budget, and to my full satisfaction. They handled everyhtng very professionally. I can wholeheartedly recommend them.

Open Sky Energy is a great company to work with. No pushy sales pitch, just honest, knowledgeable, friendly and patient support during the entire process. Two of the founders did the actual install, I don't know how you could do better than having that kind of expertise on site. Everything has been flawless in our system, and during the literal hottest August in recorded history we paid $0 for our electric. There's also good ongoing communication after the installation and support to get setup with credits from the state. I would absolutely recommend Open Sky Energy to anyone who wants to get their installation done right and know they'll be supported if needed.

Great team to work with. On time, on budget. Willing and able to work within my constraints. Pushed the township and PECO to approve the request when township and PECO delayed their responses.

I obtained proposals from three companies and the proposal I received from Open Sky Energy, while neither the least, nor the most expensive, was the most detailed and thoughtful with respect to my particular needs and plans. Joe spoke with me at length about various options for panel placement on my roof, and types of panels that could be used , along with the pros and cons of the options. I ended up having panels installed on three different levels of my roof. The project timetable was as projected aside from some external delays imposed by permitting processes slowed by COVID. Prior to installation Joe and Mike both came over to detail the site further and provide options for placement of electrical meters and shutoffs on the exterior of the house. They also personally came to prep the attachment of the brackets to my roof given that I have a rolled asphalt roof, which is not your typical roof type recommended for solar panels. Installation was very professional the site was clean throughout the process. As soon as the panels were installed, PECO was contacted to change my meter and within a day, Joe came out to turn the system on and educate me on using the software for monitoring the output of my panels. The panels are operating as planned and I couldn't be happier with the process and the final result. I highly recommend this company!

Open Sky responded quickly to my request for help and Joe Coyle (one of two partners) was very good to deal with. The damage to our panels from the squirrels was extensive. 18 of 36 panels were damaged, with 11 damaged beyond repair. To replace the panels that could not be repaired, I bought replacements from RENVU. Open Sky reinstalled the 25 original panels and successfully integrated the 11 new panels into our array. From that point of view, they were fine. However, there are 3 reasons I would not use Open Sky again. First is that we recently had a home inspection performed on our house as we prepare to sell it. The home inspector opened our Fronius Inverter's front panel and noticed 4 screws laying in the bottom of the inverter case. When he tried to operate the DC Main Shut Off, he noted that the panel to which it was mounted was not secure. He also noticed that the option card cover panel next to the DC Shut Off panel was not secure. Both panels were loose at the bottom. I shut off the system and removed the two panels. That's when we saw that the plastic insulator / divider panels were installed up side down and had obviously been jammed into place. I corrected the plastic panels' installation and used two of the "extra" screws that had been lying in the case to secure them. I also saw that one of the printed circuit cards was not in its guide and reinstalled that. The two panels were then reinstalled by placing the bottom of each panel in the case slots provided and with two screws on each panel at the top. The last two "extra" screws were used to secure the options cards to the option card panel. With all of the screws and panel edges correctly in place, the DC Disconnect Switch worked as it should and the panels were properly secure in the cabinet. The system was switched back on and is operating normally. The 2nd reason I wouldn't use Open Sky again is because of the poor job they initially did when they installed a metal squirrel barrier around the perimeter of the solar panel array. They left numerous gaps that the squirrels found just a day after the job was completed. Open Sky came back after I e-mailed them and they corrected the barrier installation. I feel it should have been done correctly the first time. The barrier has since been successful in preventing squirrels from getting under the panels. Lasly, the Open Sky tech who did all of the work with our Fronius Inverter was Mike Matotek. In addition to not reassembling the inverter correctly, he was arrogant and condescending some of the times when I tried talking to him. Here's a little note to Mike. If you're going to lay attitude on a customer, you had better be able to back it up by doing a good job. Having extra parts after you're done re-assembling something means you haven't assembled it correctly.
Response from Open Sky Energy
"We are sorry to hear that [Member Name Removed] was not happy with his experience working with Open Sky Energy. If you would like to hear our side of this issue please read on: Our company was contacted by [Member Name Removed] to troubleshoot a non-working system that had been originally installed by a company that is no longer in business. We did not install any of the original solar equipment or inverter and were only contracted to perform a limited amount of repair work on the system. The customer told us of his plans to sell the house in the near future, so we were told that a full replacement of the faulty system was not desired. Instead we were requested to reuse and repair as much of the equipment as possible. We were able to save the customer the replacement costs of $20,000+ by taking the time to work with the existing damaged equipment. Although he was unhappy about some of the screws that were used and the plastic cover inside of the inverter, overall I believe we delivered as promised for a fair price. Repair work is tricky since the mechanic that last touched the project tends to get blamed for everything downstream. We have been a successful business since 2008 with many happy customers! Nonetheless, we are sincerely sorry that [Member Name Removed] was not happy working with us and we do wish him the best with his home sale and move. Sincerely, Michael Matotek Open Sky Energy"

We did not have one issue or complaint at all with the services Joe and Michael provided. They were very professional and dependable throughout the entire job. I appreciated the way they respected my house and worked around my schedule to get the job done in a timely manner. Definitely would recommend their services to anyone who is interested in solar.

OpenSky Energy helped us to install solar panel in my home. Joe, Mike and their team are the best! They designed it well and installed the system in less than 2 days. They are very thorough in going over every steps during the process. We are super happy about their work. I am glad that we didn't go with some big name companies. We did interview 3 companies before we decide to go with OpenSky.

Joe and Michael, co-owners of Open Sky Energy, provided an onsite survey of my home to evaluate the potential for solar panel installation on my roof.  The conversation we had was very informative and  I was happy that all my questions about going solar were answered. The proposal that they sent the same day had the estimated kWh's that the panels would generate using my specific roof orientation and amount of shade from nearby trees, the cost, and the number of years for the investment to break even and more. It was a very pleasant and professional experience.

I had been considering solar for a long time, and talked with a number of solar companies.  Open Sky (I've been dealing with one of the co-owners, Joe Coyle) seemed the most knowledgeable and straightforward.  There are no "sales" people - Joe and his business partner handle all customer interaction and will also do the installation themselves.  We talked about a wide range of options (types and colors of panels, types of inverters, how the panels would be attached to the roof).  I felt like he educated me very well and that I could make a confident decision.
The 30% tax credit for solar system installation (set to expire at the end of this year) will reduce the overall cost of my system to $11,019.  Open Sky's price was better than anyone else I talked to for outright purchase.  (They don't do the kind of "rent you a panel" thing that Solar City does, but the math works out much better for me to buy a system.)
They will handle all the permitting, the PECO interconnection, everything (except replacing my 22 year old roof).

We had been given presentations by several companies and salesmen and felt like most of them were trying to sell us on packages that were not in our financial best interest.  One salesman actually insisted that we buy a system that would provide over 100% of our power needs but would cost about $10K more than Open Sky Energy's bid and would require the company would need to obtain a variance from our township.  We learned that obtaining a variance to build a bigger system than allowed by local ordinance is far from a sure thing and can require lawyers ($$$) to get approval.  Open Sky's representatives were very helpful in a non-pressuring way and laid things out to us in a very open, honest manner.  Since they have done solar installations in our township, they let us know how what they need to do to get fast approval for our system.  Joe and Mike explained how our system will produce SREC credits based upon the amount of electricity our system generates and what the options are for using the credits.  They also educated us about how the energy our system generates will flow through our electric meter to reverse the Kwhr reading and result in reduced or eliminated electric bills.  They were very upfront about telling us why they recommenced a particular manufacturer's solar panels and inverters.  Basically, they recommended a European manufacturer that has been in the business for over 40 years and whose panels are rated highly and whose inverters are virtually failure free for 10-15 years. The thing that has pleased me most about Open Sky is that they are acting as our project manager handling everything from lining up the financing, obtaining our SREC certification, and coordinating the procurement of materials and obtaining the necessary permits.  Thus far, our experience with Joe has been excellent.  He gets things done on schedule and he is very responsive to our questions and concerns.  Open Sky Energy is probably the best contracting experience we have had in 16 years living in NJ.  I highly recommend letting this company be part of your solar power companies you solicit for business.  I also recommend contacting at least 3 solar companies for bids before choosing which way to go.

It went well; we were happy with the service. It was a small operation so the same people worked with us all the way along so they did all the work themselves. They were great. The work was as agreed to and it was of good quality. I have not had any  problems with it.

I had done a lot of reading and calculations of what I thought we could put on our roof and what it would generate.  I also had some idea of what I thought it would cost and what the payback period would look like.  When Joe talked through the install process and timing and Mike ran through the financial numbers, I knew I had found the team for our solar install.  The financial numbers shown were very realistic and towards the conservative side of all estimates I had worked up on my own with available data (much more realistic than some other proposals that came my way). The timing for the project (including buffer time for getting permits, etc) also made sense given my past experiences with home renovations.
Now to the work done.  We are extremely happy with the final product and the power we are generating is exactly in-line with our expectations.  The project progressed very smoothly from start to finish.   While there were some minor delays with permit approval, panel delivery, etc., Joe/Mike were very communicative throughout the project and had built time into the work plan to make sure no large delays were encountered and the project kept moving forward towards completion.
As echoed above, what impressed me most was their sense of reality related to large projects that have potential unknowns and they set realistic expectations/deadlines.  All of the permitting was handled by them and they also brought in a structural engineer to confirm roof calculations. Once the install was completed, Joe walked me through all the software and connections that had been put in place.  They also helped set us up with a SREC broker and submitted all the paperwork necessary for net-metering to PECO.
I would definitely hire Joe and Mike again for solar and electrical work.  Very professional all around and nice guys on top of that!

I met with two other solar companies before choosing Open Sky Energy. The other solar companies sent sales reps who were not very knowledgeable about solar.  Joe Coyle & Michael Matotek, the owners of Open Sky Energy, handle both sales and installation. They answered all my questions (and I had many questions).
If I were rating Joe and Michael on a scale of 1-10, I would give them a 20!  They were a pleasure to work with from the very beginning.  They always kept me informed of their progress during the installation, which was completed without a problem.
There are not enough words to describe how wonderful they are, but here are a few:  professional, knowledgeable, patient, respectful, ethical, personable, competent.

I spoke with Michael, who happened to be visiting the area today and had an opening to stop by.  There was a chance that they could remove the panels today and I was all for that.  They did have all their equipment with them and the truck to cart away the old panels to be recycled (a plus to me vs sending it to the landfill). They both were extremely professional, polite, collaborative in their decision making (you could tell they've worked together for a long time) and they were just really conscientious and knowledgeable, too.
They worked quickly, but efficiently-the pieces they removed were glass, heavy, so they were extremely careful lowering them down the ladder. Yes, I was impressed with Open Sky Energy, I'm sure they'd put just as much thought and attention to detail in installing a new system.  Hope we can do business with them again when the time comes.
