"Karp Excavating did a super job clearing some land for us. Installed a driveway and leveled a pad site for a pole barn. They were timely and professional. We were very happy with the work. The barn started and I needed stone. I called and with in 1 hour I had two triaxle loads of stone. Zoe the dog was also there. She is the project manager. Haha"

"Don and his workers were amazing. I was hit very suddenly last year with a chronic illness and can no longer carry anything heavy and I have extreme reactions to any sort of mold or allergen. With my fiancee working mandatory overtime for the last 7 months, our trash had built to a level where we couldn't catch up. Don and two workers came in and not only cleared out all of the trash bags on our porch, but also bagged up stuff from the house, and took old furniture that we've been trying to figure out how to get out to the curb for months. In less than 2 hours, they completed something that had been hanging over our heads for almost a year. It feels amazing! Don's customer service went above and beyond as well. He came and did a free estimate a couple days before the cleanup where we showed him everything that needed done. When he arrived with his crew, he double checked with me to make sure it was all still the same, and when they finished, he took my fiancee from room to room asking if they had removed everything we wanted him to rather than just telling us he'd finished up. He even sprayed Febreze on the porch for us. I 100% recommend D&J Excavating for any kind of trash, junk, or appliance removal. The pricing was reasonable, the service was quick and efficient, and Don made sure we were fully happy with the job."

Excavating questions, answered by experts

Excavations take a few days or up to a few weeks. The time it takes to excavate an area depends on the size of the area, the type of soil, the type of excavator, and even the time of year, since winter can make digging up the ground more difficult.

There are many ways to cut through roots when digging, especially if your trencher doesn’t seem to be removing the roots. First, use a shovel to expose the roots. Then, use gardening shears to clear out smaller roots or a reciprocating saw to remove larger plant roots. If you plan on keeping the plant, avoid cutting any roots over 2 inches thick.

A joint utility trench, or joint trench, is a long, buried ditch on a property that contains two or more utility lines rather than running the lines in multiple trenches. Some utilities, like gas and electric or electric and communication lines, are better suited to joint trenching, while others, like water and sewer, are not allowed to be in the same trench.

The best method for digging a trench depends on the scope of the project. For a short, shallow trench (less than 2 feet deep) in light, soft soil, digging by hand may be sufficient. However, digging by hand is labor-intensive, so consider the effort required. A machine trencher is the better option for longer trenches (over 100 feet), deeper ones, or when dealing with difficult soil conditions, such as rocky or hard ground, or obstructions like tree roots. A machine can save significant time and energy in these situations.

Most residential basements are 8 to 10 feet deep. You can dig deeper depending on building codes, but it does become more difficult. You’ll likely need to install stronger foundation walls and additional supports to handle the increased load. Depending on the water table, you may also need a water management system. Clay soil can support a deeper foundation than sandy soil. A structural engineer will be able to tell you the maximum, feasible depth.
