If you find that the laminate boards are chipping as you cut, you can try flipping the board upside down and cutting the backside first. You can also make a small cut to the top of the board before flipping it and cutting it from the backside. If these strategies do not work, you can place painter’s tape along the edge of the cut to prevent chipping. It is also possible that the saw blade is dull and needs to be replaced.

The best blades for cutting laminate are carbide laminate-cutting blades. These blades have horizontal teeth rather than teeth that point upward and cut on the upward stroke. You should never use gritty or abrasive cleaners to clean your Formica countertops, and the same goes for scouring sponges, steel wool, or anything acid-based like vinegar. Formica can't handle high heat, so never place anything fresh from the oven or off the stovetop on a laminate surface because it will scorch.

First, use the right blade, which we’ve already discussed. However, there are other ways to prevent chipping, such as using painter’s tape to mark the edges. It creates a clear, easy-to-see line. Cutting from the top down can also prevent chipping when using a blade with horizontal teeth. You may also want to cut from the back of the laminate sheet toward you to better stay on the line and keep your speed consistent.

To prevent Formica from chipping when cutting, use a sharp blade appropriate for the laminate surface. It also helps to score a line first. Another tip is to add masking over the line you plan to cut and ensure you are cutting the Formica face down.
