I asked my Facebook community to recommend a contractor who could do remodel our bathroom and Troy Fry was one of the people referred to me by a friend who had hired him to work on their rentals. Some of the reasons I was interested in speaking with him was that they said he performed first rate work and would be conscious about working within our budget. I reached out to Troy by phone and was able to set up an appointment to look at our bathroom. Within a few weeks we were able to get an appointment and look at the space.
During the initial appointment, Troy asked several questions about what end product we were looking for. We wanted to save money as much as we could and our Father in Law is a professional plumber and he wanted to participate in this remodel as much as possible. Troy was willing work with our requests and gave us the option to purchase the fixtures and cosmetic materials on our own to save a % markup for materials he purchased. Based on our meeting he provided a cost estimate for labor and materials for his part of the scope of work and gave a general estimate on what we could expect to pay for the the new fixtures. He also had a very good design that increased our storage space and provided for two sinks instead of one.
We hired him to perform the work for us with 50% down payment and set a tentative start date. Troy gave us a list of items we would need to purchase and consolidate in our garage. He recommended a great counter top person, a cabinet maker, a plumbing place with show room, and a flooring person. We met with all of them and made our decisions and made our purchases. We learned along the way that despite our beer budget, we have champagne tastes!
Troy worked with our schedule on the remodel start date and when it began, things happened very quickly. Remodeling is dirty and dusty work however the house was kept as clean as it could have been during the process. Troy works with a core team of two and hires out electrical and plumbing and specialty plaster work to his preferred providers. They used our garage and driveway as the work space and each day gave us an update on progress either in person or by notes or e-mail. Troy uses e-mail and text to communicate rather than phone calls which was more convenient for us, but when we needed to get him on the phone, there was no problem doing so. The process from beginning to end took about 3 weeks.
Troy met us near the end of the project for a recap and to give us an update on our expenses. He did not want to collect payment until the project was complete. There were some minor finishing details that took a few days to resolve and then he met us again to provide the final bill. The final cost was close to his estimate for his labor and materials.
We are very satisfied the the finished bathroom. It met all of our expectations and more. It ended up being a complete strip down and remodel including a tile floor and new window because the doorway was too small to bring in the new tub enclosure. We added upgrades along the way with the tile flooring and very nice counter top options so our budget for purchasing items got a little away from us.
If I needed to repeat the experience, I would hire Troy and his contractors to perform the remodel without hesitation.
