I just moved to Eugene from Greensboro, NC. So, my Nissan Frontier just finished a cross-country road trip. It was well due for an oil change and I wanted to get it checked out to make sure everything had survived the trip and was functioning properly. The only thing I knew about, that wasn't quite right was a light, but shrill, squeaking noise being emitted when going over bumpy/rough surfaces. It wasn't louder when the windows were down, suggesting that it wouldn't have been anything involved with the wheels, shocks, struts, etc. I asked them to try to diagnose the sound during the service. They were very punctual in getting back to me (about 4 hours after dropping it off without appointment). However, they were unable to locate a squeaking noise, much less diagnose it. I found this implausible, since it had squeaked the whole ride to the shop. I paid anyway. During this transaction they told me that my brake pads were right at the point of needing to be replaced and that my muffler was beginning to acquire quite a bit of rust. The former being more urgent than the latter, they gave me an estimate for it. At this point, I had no intention of coming back to them for that job, since they hadn't diagnosed (or even found) the problematic symptom. But, after I paid, I was told to swing back by if I leave and it still squeaks. That lightened me up a bit. So, I left. My truck still squeaked. I took it back to the shop. I described the properties of the sound more thoroughly, directly with the technician and he took it out for another test, this time returning in agreement that there was, in fact, a squeak present. After a few minutes poking around the truck while on the lift, one of them noticed that the hood wasn't sitting stably when closed. The stoppers had apparently shifted. He turned them out to the proper height, then tested for the squeak again. It was gone. I was very glad that it was something simple and inexpensive. I was even more glad that the people at Sandpiper had been willing to work with me and spend some extra time to figure out what was wrong and have me go home satisfied, rather than take my money and insinuate that I was crazy and just hearing things. That lightened me up the rest of the way. I now fully intend to have my brake pads replaced there. They're good people: honest, diligent, and trustworthy.
