I recently contacted Square 1 to see about having some troubleshooting done in my home. I chose them based on location and high ratings. Unfortunately I ended up having to call another company because Square 1 could not get to me for longer than I was willing to wait. The person I spoke to was very courteous and I would definitely call them again.

I bought certificates on Angie's List for 4 new bathroom fans + installation. Two electricians arrived on time and did the work professionally. They removed the old fans and fan housing and installed the new fans and housing. After installing the fans, they did a great job cleaning the area in which they worked. They had me listen to each fan to make sure I was happy with their work. I had never used Square 1 Electric and would definitely use them again.

This company did a good job for me. They came out promptly to give me an estimate, which was in line with what the hot-tub dealer had said to expect. At the same time I had them bid another small job and they were very knowledgeable about the electrical code and the best way to accomplish what I needed. I had them go ahead with the hot tub wiring job, which was very well done, as far as I can see. As they did the wiring and junction boxes, etc., they let me know that they were allowing for future additions, so I wouldn't have to have more work done if I needed to add other things on the deck. I decided against doing the second project for the time being, but I would hire this company again if I go ahead with it in the future.

I chose Square 1 because it had such a high rating on Angie's List. Mitch spent almost the entire day with us and completed a "wish list" I had that I thought would take at least two visits. He picked up a fan for our bathroom on his way over, but it wasn't the right fan because I had given an incorrect description. Instead he removed the old fan, told us where we could take it to get a new motor rather than replacing the entire fan, and showed us how to replace it when we got it back. (My grandkids took it in the next day and we had it back up by afternoon.) So, money saved. We had purchased a freezer and I thought we'd need a new outlet in the garage. Mitch looked at it and told us a splitter was more than adequate for the job. Mitch climbed through our attic on a very hot day and installed boxes for light fixtures and fans in three bedrooms and an office (all of which required extra wiring), then told us where we could find the kind of fixtures we wanted and how to install them. We bought them and my grandson installed them the next day. Money saved. Our gas fireplace hadn't worked for months; I asked Mitch to check the switch. He did that and checked the fireplace equipment, but said since it is gas he could only check the wires. The gas company sent someone out the next day and he found the problem (it wasn't electrical). Problem solved. I wanted a light fixture in my office instead of indirect can lighting. He put in a box (required extra wiring) and now I can remove the three lamps I crammed in the office so I could see! We had a large area kitchen that had inadequate light -- he installed three new can light fixtures. He improved the electrical system in my husband's office, too. He was here most of the day. He was pleasant, helpful, informative, and tidy. He worked steadily and didn't waste time. I had to wait for this appointment because they've been so busy, and I'm glad I did. Yes, we had to pay a permit fee. I was aware of it because I'd read other Angie's List reviews, but I'd forgotten about it. But it seems like a small price to pay -- $45 -- to know that everything he did is up to code. I am delighted with his work and our new lighting. I would absolutely hire them again.
Description of Work: Installed seven new light fixture boxes, checked and repaired several switches and outlets, removed and told us how to repair our bathroom fan so we wouldn't have to pay for a new one, and generally took care of a long list of electrical items I had been wanting to have done since we moved into this house a year ago.

Square 1 had a coupon which we purchased. However, the coupon did not state the Square 1 wanted to have a roofer check their work at a cost of appx. 250 dollars in addition to the 300.00 we had already paid. Their claim was that they were electricians, not roofers. While I understand this, they should be upfront on the coupons. Additionally, it seems odd that they need someone to check their work if they frequently install attic fans. I am happy with the fan; it works well, but don't like the fact that we need a roofer come out to check their work.

Dear Customer, We are sorry for the misunderstanding. We definitely encourage our customers to have a roofer come and inspect the area of the roof where the attic fan was installed so as to make sure there are no leaks when the rain starts up again. This is a suggestion to our customers but it is up to the customer themselves whether they would like to pay to have the roofer check that or not. We apologize if that was not made clear over the phone. We are so happy that you were able to benefit from the Angie's List coupon for the Attic fan and hope that you are enjoying the results of it in this hot weather! The owner came out to give me an estimate. He said he couldn't give me an estimate because of the nature of my problem, which would require checking outlets, switches, etc., to determine what was causing this situation. He told me it would be $95/hour, plus $45 for a permit. I questioned the permit as I've had other electricians, plumbers, do jobs for me and have never been charged for a permit, and I told him I was going to check into it (which I did, and found out from both the State and County that that was not the case). I went ahead and made an appointment for the work to be done. Two technicians showed up and, after several hours, found and solved the problem. I have absolutely no problem with the quality of their work, their professionalism, and cleaning up after themselves. What I have a problem with is the bill I was presented. I was never told it would be $95/hour per person (actually, the second person was $80/hour, for a total of $175/hour). But then there was additional time tacked on, and I questioned it because I knew when they had arrived. I was informed it was for a half hour travel time. I said I was never told I would be charged travel and I'd never been charged travel before and I wasn't going to pay it. I called the office and the woman who answered told me the owner would call me. He did, and argued that he had said $95/hour per person and had also told me I'd have to pay travel time. Fortunately for me, I had a friend here who was also here when the owner had his conversation with me, and he confirmed i had not been told either of those things. The owner reluctantly agreed to have the technician remove the extra half hour from my bill. I believe I was still overcharged by a quarter hour, but I made my point with the owner that he has to be honest and aboveboard with his customers.

Dear Customer, We are so happy that our electricians diagnosed the problems you were having with the wiring in your family room, office and hallway! Hope you are enjoying all your electrical working correctly now! We apologize if you weren't as clearly informed about our travel time fees as you would have liked. It is very important to us to cover all the bases with our customers before we come out to do the work. Unfortunately in this case, there was much to cover, which in turn makes it hard for everyone to remember. We certainly hope that you were pleased with not being charged for travel time after talking with the owner. In the review below you can see where we have posted the information for state required permits. Honesty is of upmost importance to us here at Square 1 and we need permits to be legal and upholding the quality of our work. We hope you understand. We've attached the link once more for your convenience. http://bcd.oregon.gov/programs/minorlabel/minor_label_programs.html We sincerely appreciate your business and hope the you are happy with the results of our work.

We purchased the installation of a ceiling fan on Angies List for $99 with Square D Electric. There had been a ceiling fan, similar to the new one we were wanting installed in the same location that was removed a year ago when the motor went out that had been originally installed when our home was constructed in 1997. We originally purchased another fan from a lamp store in NW Portland and had purchased a $99 special with Angies List for 2 hours of an electricians time to install the fan. The previous electrician (JLT) came out and said after looking at the new fan that it didn't have the correct connection and told my husband the type of fan we needed. The lamp store didn't believe the electrician and they sent their own electrician out and he agreed with the first electricians recommendation. The lamp store refunded us the money and they worked with us to purchase a different fan that they didn't have in stock but could order from a different vendor. The new fan sat in our house for at least six months (it was now the winter we didn't really need a fan). We didn't want to call the first electrician back because he wasn't going to charge us but I felt bad for him because he drove all the way out from Troutdale originally and he spent the two hours at our house verifying through different methods that the fan wouldn't work (there had also been a missing part with the first fan which caused a different problem on its own). When I saw the $99 special and it was coming up on the summer I thought "perfect: we will finally get this fan installed. when I called to schedule the appointment, I was told that there would be a $45 permit fee to install the fan. I thought it was strange that a permit fee was required, but I said "Ok". The first electrician didn't ask for a $45 permit fee. My husband was at the house when two electricians arrived from Square D, we have never had two electricians at our house to install a fan or a huge light fixture in our two story entry way. They told my husband that the box where the fan was to be installed needed to be replaced, at a cost of $175 in labor and $91 in parts. Needless to say my husband was upset because two previous electricians had not identified any problems with the box and we felt we were being totally ripped off by Square D. I'm telling people to stay away from Square D Electric because they use a bait and switch tactic. Don't be fooled by the nice lady that answers their phone and schedules the appointments, because the electricians are crooks.

To our Valued Customer, We at Square 1 Electric would like to take a moment to address your concerns. We take all our customer’s opinions of our performance very seriously. We are so sorry that you had such an unpleasant experience trying to get your new ceiling fan installed before Square 1 came into the picture and then that you were not 100% happy with the results of our work. We never intend for our customers to feel they are not being treated fairly. We want to be clear that the Angie’s List coupon that you purchased has been listed below, with all items listed that are included and not included with the offer you purchased: Square 1 Electric, an Angie's List "A" rated Service Provider and Super Service Award Winner, is offering to replace up to 1 standard ceiling fan or 2 standard light fixtures for ONLY $99! This service is normally valued at $175, saving Angie's List members just over $76. The Fine Print •Not valid for cash back •Coupon cannot be applied to current or past jobs •Appointments are to be performed during normal business hours •Coupon cannot be combined with other specials or offers •Coupon is for residential service only •Appointments must be scheduled and performed during normal business hours •Normal cancellation policies apply •One coupon per person/household •Additional coupons can be purchased as gifts •This coupon is for LABOR only. •Permit Fees Companies such as ours are very limited in controlling the details promoted on Angie’s List coupons. We get general options that umbrella the work we do and sometimes that creates a gap in explanation of what exactly we are offering. As you can see from the above “Fine Print” list Permit fees and project materials are not included on the coupon you purchased. The coupon is for the labor performed on the removal and replacement of the existing fixture or ceiling fan. Any additional work for updating materials is not included in the coupon. The box that had initially housed your original ceiling fan was rated for installation at the time it was installed. It does not meet the rated standard for the new one you wanted to replace it with. We never would want to install anything that will cut corners or provide you with substandard materials. If we were to use the original box with the new fan and it eventually failed in some way, we would then be responsible for the follow up repair since we guarantee all of our work and materials. We are so sorry we were unable to be aware of this issue beforehand or we would certainly have explained why it would not have been completely covered on the coupon. Regarding the confusion with the $45 permit, we follow the Oregon State and National Electrical Code laws by permitting all work. The State of Oregon requires that all minor wiring in the state must be permitted by a Minor Label Permit. There are many contractors that do not provide permits as a “Cost cutting measure” for customers. By not permitting any work, customers have no way to prove the work was done legally and are at the mercy of the contractor for giving “their word” that the work is done safely and correctly. Here are the requirements from the State of Oregon Minor Label Permit program website: Who may use electrical minor labels? The following licensees may use minor labels for an installation: 1.Electrical contractor with supervisor. What kind of work may a contractor perform with an electrical minor label? Type of Work: •Replacement of multiple switches, circuit breakers, receptacles, light fixtures, smoke detectors, or GFCI or AFCI circuit breakers and receptacles of 15-20 amp, 125-volt in a dwelling unit. •Extension of not more than two existing branch electrical circuits limited to 30 amps each and, if relevant, connection of appliance. •Installation of one new electrical circuit limited to 30 amps and, if relevant, connection of a related appliance. •Repair or replacement of damaged components of existing electrical equipment including services not to exceed 200 amps, provided a reconnect is not required by the serving utility. •Repair or replacement of a furnace, oil or gas not to exceed 20 amperes at 120/240 volts. •Repair or replacement of a fan that is part of an HVAC system, not to exceed 20 amperes at 120/240 volts. •Repair or replacement of a dishwasher or garbage disposal not to exceed 20 amperes at 120/240 volts. •Repair or replacement of a water heater with an electrical circuit not to exceed 30 amperes at 120/240 volts. •Repair or replacement of an electrical furnace, air conditioning unit or refrigeration unit not to exceed 120/240 volts. •A defective ballast, or up to five ballasts under one label. •Repair and maintenance of renewable electrical energy systems. •Repair, replacement and maintenance of installed pump or irrigation systems for the same horsepower and voltage. •Installation, repair and replacement in new or existing construction of one-and two family dwellings, of HVAC, telephone, garage door, vacuum systems, door bells, burglar, fire alarm and security systems, and audio/stereo systems not exceeding 100 volt-amperes, in Class 2 or 3 installations. •Installation, repair and replacement of installations not exceeding 100 volt-amperes in Class 2 or 3 installations in one and two family dwellings •Installation, repair and replacement of up to 5 devices under one label for the following installations not exceeding 100 volt-amperes in Class 2 or 3 installations in other existing buildings For any other information or details, here is the direct link to the Minor Label Permit Program for the State of Oregon. minorlabels.dcbs.oregon.gov/

It was an Angie's List Big Deal that I purchased. It worked out fine. They did exactly what they needed to do and they were fairly prompt and they did a good job. I spent more than the deal because what was not clear in the advertisement was that they do charge an additional fee for either a state or a county permit and you have to pay them directly for that. They can't do the work without it. I talked to them and they said that they told Angie's List that this should be put into the cost and it was not. So that's something that Angie's List should consider doing. I didn't mind paying it because it has to get paid but that wasn't part of the ad.

Robert and his partner (I didn't get his name) showed up a bit later than expected but they had to come all the way across town from another job so it was understandable and not a problem. I showed them where i wanted the fan installed and how they might be able to run the wiring with a minimum amount of cutting into the drywall. They went right to work and finished the job in two hours. There was a glitch but it was no fault of theirs. When they turned the unit on the fan worked fine but the light didn't work at all. After troubleshooting, they determined that the cause was a faulty receiver. There was no power coming out of the receiver for the light. They showed me how to replace the part when I received a new one. They were both very professional and pleasant to work with. They used dropcloths and left only a little drywall powder that was easy to clean up. The labor coupon from Angie's List made the cost very reasonable. $45 of the cost was for a state required permit.

He was really nice but he was way expensive. Our house is really vintage and old and we had all remodeled. So we had the bathroom fixtures, the bathtub, completely re-seated the thing. They came in and made a mold of the tub and they put in tile and did it in one day literally, re-bath that's what it is. Then we decided that we were going to go with re-bath because part of the tile needed to be torn out and they were really the only ones that can do that type of thing. So they're the ones ended up doing the plumbing work. The guy that came out was really nice, and we probably would have eventually chosen him, it's just expensive furious. We liked him and I think we both trusted him and he was really nice. I think they're expensive but everything about plumbing is expensive. It was great, he just came out and took a looked and fooled around a little bit to see what needed to be done. They were very professional.

They were able to do everything at the price of the deal. There was no existing fan there but they were able to get in the attic to install. They did a great job.

Working in a Mobile Home can be difficult. While installing the ceiling fans Robert discovered that the supports used to secure the fans to the ceiling were too weak. They had to update the materials used. Robert and Nathan knew exactly what had to be done. They did excellent work and were both very friendly. I believe anyone would be more than happy with the quality of their work.
Description of Work: Installed two Ceiling Fans and brought the Material used to secure the fans up to current code.

We are so happy to hear that our electricians are so pleasantly adaptable to the type of work they encounter at any given job they arrive at. Safety is always a priority for us here at Square 1 Electric so the fact that the ceiling was to weak to hold the fans was key to how they would preform the work. We are so happy that you were able to see Square 1's high standard of problem solving skills at work! Thank you for your business and we look forward to working with you again.

They were fantastic! They came in the morning and gave us a bid that was competitive with some others that we had received. The awesome thing is that they are able to give a bid in the moment as they have the computer with them to draft out the scope of the work. We asked them to go a little lower as we wanted to support this smaller company. Later that day, they called and stated that they had a job cancellation and if they could come out the same day they would lower the cost by $200. They came right out and installed everything quickly, professionally and well. We were very pleased and impressed with work performed and would hire this company again in the future.

The Square 1 Electric electrician visited us a few days before the installation date to give us a quote and to survey the requirements of the job. He was very friendly and thorough, asked a lot of questions about what we needed, and looked at the ceiling fans to make sure we had all of the necessary components. He called about an hour before he arrived on the installation day. He was very professional and completed the work in a very competent manner, cleaning up after finishing with each fan. He needed to cut into our sheetrock, and explained the options for how he could do that. He was very friendly and as quiet as he could be (I work at home) and completed the work in the time he said it would take. After he had cleaned up the area where he had installed the 2nd fan, he made sure that everything was working to our satisfaction, showed us how to use the remote control devices and how to reset them in case of battery failure. He also attached the permit tag to our electrical panel, so if we are ever inspected, the tag will be easy to locate. We are extremely pleased with the work done by Square 1 Electric and will use their services again!
Description of Work: We had Square 1 Electric install 2 ceiling fans. The electrician needed to add a line and a new switch unit for each fan. The electrician was very thorough and professional. He explained everything he was doing, and consulted with us when he ran into a problem. He offered his opinions on possible solutions to a problem, and gave us the pros and cons, which we really appreciated. He spent several hours here, as there were some issues with the joists in our ceiling. We are very pleased with the installation of the fans, and how they operate. We will definitely use Square 1 Electric again for any electrical work we need performed.

All of us here at Square 1 are so pleased to hear such wonderful things about the performance of our crew! It is nice to hear feedback on how our company is doing as a whole. Hearing that everything from the pre-installation appointment/quote to scheduling the electrician to come out, all the way through the completion of the project installation and clean up going well shows that all the hard work going into every project is paying off! For our customers see how our company works hard to have things run smoothly from start to finish is so valuable to us. It is a pleasure doing business with you and look forward to helping you out with any electrical needs you may have in the future.
