When a window is painted shut, this means that paint has gotten into the cracks when window sashes or window frames were being painted. Streaky trim paint can result from several factors, including improper application techniques and insufficient coats. If you use a brush too large or damaged, you’re more likely to get uneven coverage. Using the wrong paint for the surface can also mean it’s not opaque enough to get the right coverage and a smooth finish. Remember to keep drying times in mind if you’re doing multiple coats. Make sure the bottom layer is completely dry before adding another layer. Otherwise, the brush and drag and clump the different paint textures, leading to a streaky, bumpy mess.

Always fill gaps before painting for the most professional results. Gap-filling materials such as caulk and wood filler require primer and paint to match surrounding surfaces, so addressing gaps during your painting project ensures consistent color and finish throughout the room.

Newer paint cans often come with an “easy pour” spout with a twist lid. These can be tricky to open, but the key is to grip the spout cover with your fingers and twist it counter-clockwise. There should be a raised ridge in the middle to make it easy to grab. For more standard twist lids, you can try prying the lid off by turning it with your hands, as you would a jar, or running it under warm water.
