"Today Sean with Rain Guard came to take care of an issue with the Gutter helmet which had worked its way out a little from underneath the roof shingles. The opening had created an opportunity for starlings to squeeze in and build a huge nest in the gutter, blocking the downspout. Sean removed the nest, reattached the helmet and even inventively covered a tiny opening which might have allowed smaller birds to have access. He did this at no charge to me, and in a most friendly and personable manner. Thank you so much Sean! P.S. We had our guttering system installed in 2005 and have never regretted it - it really works!"

There should be small gaps between your roof and the walls of your home, and other buildings. These small gaps let building materials shift, expand, and contract with weather and other outside forces, and they prevent moisture from wicking down walls from roofing and gutter systems. Without these strategic gaps, your home’s exterior and its finishes can sustain water damage, decay, peel, delaminate, and crack. However, there is a fine line between a smart gap and a problematic gap—all  gaps should be small, intentional, and covered or filled in with foam insulation to prevent pests from using them as access points.

The most obvious and severe sign of a roof leak is the presence of wet spots on your ceilings, specifically on the top floor of your home. You can also identify a roof leak from your attic if you see sagging insulation or if you notice mold growth or water stains on the rafters or the underside of the roof deck. From the street, look for cracked or missing shingles, moss growth, and shingles that are curling upward, all of which can suggest a leak.

Though cedar shakes often get confused with shingles, there are a few key differences between wood shakes and wood shingles. For one, cedar shingle prices are lower, although shingles are less durable than wood shakes. Cedar shakes are thicker than shingles (shingles range from about 3/8 to 1/2 inches thick, compared to 1/2 to 3/4 inches thick for shakes). Wood shakes are handmade, while shingles are usually machine-made. Also, wood shakes work better on steeper roofs than shingles do. While the cost of cedar shingles is more budget-friendly, there are many great reasons to choose shakes.

The recommended spacing for furring strips is 12 to 24 inches apart. Proper furring strip spacing allows for good airflow, improved drainage, noise reduction, and better energy efficiency. Furring strip spacing can vary based on the roof’s pitch and the type of metal roof, so consult the manufacturer or your roofer for the correct spacing.

The four types of roof sheathing are plywood, oriented strand board (OSB), planks, and tone-and-groove boards. The overwhelming majority of homes use the first two (especially OSB) and the other two are not often seen outside of special use cases. Methods of sheathing include solid sheathing, open sheathing where there are gaps, and plank sheathing. Most roofs are solid sheathing.
