Response from Mr. Electric of Central Oklahoma
Thanks for the kind words. We always strive to supply Expert Electrical Service. I understand that $238 can seem like a high price for the work that was completed but there is more to the service than what you see. A Service Professional must spend 4 years in an apprenticeship program before getting the opportunity to take the State Journeyman Electrical exam, (the average number of times to pass the exam is 4+). The Journeyman Electrician can then work for a Licensed Electrical Contractor who has spent 6+ years learning his trade before qualifying to take the Electrical Contractors Exam. We all have to complete continuing education requirements to keep informed of our National Electric Code which updates every 3 years. Our trucks are fully stocked, (a $50K-$60K expense), so that we can respond to a customers needs without additional trips to a supply house, and without taking up more of our customers time. We are required to carry $2 Million in aggregate insurance to protect our customers from product or workmanship failures. We pay for vehicle insurance, health insurance, unemployment insurance, matching SS, Worker Compensation, Medicare/Medicaid, retirement, paid vacation, paid holidays, and Christmas bonuses. We must buy a State License, State Bond, and Licenses in every city that we work in, (currently 17). We purchase background checks for all employees for customer safety. We have vehicle fuel and maintenance costs, office/warehouse rent, accounting expense, payroll processing, Dispatcher, after hours answering services, uniforms, winter wear, associations and professional training, software and computer expense. We give an extended 2 year limited warranty to all Advantage Plan Members. At $110 we are at a mid range for an electrical service call in this area. We are glad to do that to help keep costs for our customers down. We appreciate the trust that you have placed in us to insure the electrical safety of your family and your property. At Mr. Electric SAFETY is JOB #1. Sincerely, Bob Kueny Mr. Electric of Central Oklahoma [pjhone numb er removed\]

Description of Work: After an initial in-home consultation, Mr. Electric removed a kitchen track light and installed recessed lights in my kitchen, along with a dimmer. He also removed a single spot light over the kitchen bar (which was too high for me to change bulbs without climbing on the counter), and installed two hanging lights. I love the hanging lights he suggested, which matched the other lighting in my breakfast area, design-wise. So glad I had this work done.

The guy was courteous and he did a good job. It's just that he was way too expensive. I bought the ceiling fans. I had one installed years ago when we bought the house and it only cost me $125.00 for an electrician. If I had known about Angie's List and read it first, I would never have hired them. The company had a bad report on there and I didn't know it. They do excellent work. They are just way overpriced. The guy cleaned up after himself. He was very thorough.

Response from Mr. Electric of Central Oklahoma
We appreciate hearing from any customer, whether the review is positive or negative. "Years ago" when we started installing ceiling fans we were charging $25/ fan, and an additional $25 for wiring if it was required. Of course we were paying 85 cents/ gal. for fuel, our workmans comp and general liability insurance costs were pennies per the dollar of payroll,(and weren't even required), and there were no code requirements regulating the installation of a ceiling fan. Now we are paying $3-4/ gal. for fuel, insurance costs are thousands of dollars per year, and the National Electric Code has specific requirements for the installation of a ceiling fan,( not to mention the increase in labor and materials ). Looking back maybe $125 to install a ceiling fan was not such a great deal "years ago". As with any product or service when the cost to deliver them goes up then the cost to the consumer goes up as well, it is a basic principle of a free market economy. Having said that we have done everything possible to keep our costs in check so that we can also keep the cost of our services to the customer in check as well. We had not increased our basic pricing structure for 6 years, I doubt that many businesses could say that. As to the "negative comments" that we have received, one was in regard to a very old home that a customer wanted to expand the electrical system, and we said that not only could we not add the electrical outlets that they wanted on the existing system, but the existing system was in serious need of complete replacement. The average home owner does not realize that even electrical systems have a limited life during which they can function safely, and then it is simply a matter of time before there is a failure. The only question is whether the failure will be an inconvenience or a catastrophe. Admittedly the service professional could have been more diplomatic in relating this information, but at least he did not try to do the work simply to get a little money. We will never compromise safety for money. There will always be someone that is "cheaper", but there will never be anyone that considers the safety of their customers more than we do at Mr. Electric.

Bob's estimate wasn't the cheapest, but I was impressed by his knowledge and professionalism. He was the only one who itemized exactly what had to be done before the generator could be installed. I'm guessing there would have been some surprise add ons with the other companies, either that or the upgrading wouldn't be done, in which case the City of Norman wouldn't have OK'd the project which might have been a problem sooner or later. It took a about a month because it involved getting a plumber to hook up the gas and a Kohler representative to "commission" the generator. Trench digging was involved and the City of Norman had to come for a visit. Plus the weather got in the way a little. But I was in no hurry because I'm pretty sure I won't need it till next winter, if then. The generator looks great. When we had our big ice storm (2008) I also had a heart related health emergency at the same time. I was in a mess. Now, I hope not to have any more health emergencies and I know I won't have any more power outages. Life is good. I liked Bob and the guys who work for him. I trusted them to come in my home, even when I was gone. They worked hard and steadily. There were no surprise charges. I won't hesitate to have Bob do more work for me again if necessary.
Description of Work: I bought a standby electric generator from and had it installed by Bob Kueny (Mr Electric.) He had to do a lot of work to bring my house up to code in the process.

Thank you for the encouraging comments. I will certainly pass them on to the other service professionals that worked on your project. It is always a pleasure to work for a customer that insists on quality and compliance with code and yes we did have some weather issues to work around. I'm not sure I have ever done a short term project during which we saw rain, sleet, snow, and ice, but having lived here for 38 years I'm not really surprised about any weather events anymore. Thank you again, and please call if you should need anything in the future. Bob Kueny Mr Electric of Central Oklahoma State License # 2086 405 447-4811/405 340-9099

The employee was very condescending to my wife. He stated she was putting our family at risk for living here. He was very insulting. Had my wife in tears. We've lived in the house for 4 years now with no problems. We've had other electricians work on the house with no problems. Since then my wife has talked to another women who had the same experience with Mr Electric making them cry. They may have really high standards for electric systems, but not in their concern for customers. I think they try to get a big sales out of emotional angst.

It has come to my attention that you had a very negative experience in January of 2009 with one of our service professionals. First and foremost I would like to apologize for the apparent way you were treated. There are no excuses that can be made for treating someone disrespectfully, especially when we have been entrusted with the responsibility to check your electrical system, arguably the most important and critical system in any home. While our training and experience tells us that a system that is "working" is not necessarily "safe", especially in vintage homes such as yours, that is never a reason to use scare tactics to move a customer to buy our services. We also do not hesitate to point out electrical safety issues to customers, but this must always be done in a professional, respectful, manner that the customer can understand. At times it is important for us to express a sense of urgency when we see issues that may in fact be hazardous to the homeowner, but again this must be done without inciting fear and unwarranted concern. It is never acceptable to scare someone into a buying decision, or to make them feel that they have no other choice but to have the work done or their family would be endangered. We know that we are never going to be the cheapest solution to a customer's electrical problem or project, but we always want to be the most thorough and conscientious, and we will never compromise a customer's safety simply to sell a job. Again I apologize for the way you were treated, it is not consistent with the training given to our service professionals, and is certainly not up to the standards that we aspire to. First of all, we think $250 to change an outlet (a task that took ten minutes) is far too much. We expected a $60 to $80 service call fee, which is a lot, but standard, but they also added on a bunch of other fees. On top of that, the service man acted rather condescending when he saw how we were trying to fix it ourselves (we apparently didn't have the right kind of outlet). When we remodeled our master bath a year ago, we spent $280 for an electrician to change a CFGI outlet and install a whole new light in the shower! Should've hired that guy again.
Description of Work: We had one outlet in the bathroom start to burn. Rather than replace it ourselves, and since we needed to switch it to a GFCI outlet, we thought we should let someone who knew what they were doing install. A fairly simple task, we thought.

We have recently been made aware of a negative service experience that you had with our company in January of 2008. First and foremost we want to apologize for the attitude that the service professional exhibited when he came to your home. This is not consistent with the level of service that we expect from our technicians. While we are not going to be the cheapest, we strive to provide a service that our customers can see as a true value. It is apparent that we fell short of that goal in your case. It is not uncommon to receive a call from a customer that has tried to do a "simple" electrical repair or installation and found themselves over their heads. While we cannot encourage a homeowner to undertake "do it yourself" electrical projects, we should never belittle or speak condescendingly to a customer that has made a repair or installation attempt. We train our technicians to understand that it is the customer that has entrusted us with the safety of their home and family and we should make every effort to earn that trust by being respectful, polite, and conscientious. We appreciate the opportunity to address issues that we may have never known of had it not been for your posting. We have reviewed the invoice from that service call and would like to send you a refund in the amount of $82.11 (which is the Basic Diagnostic Charge of 74.08+8.03 interest). Again we want to apologize for the negative experience that you had with our company, and thank you for letting us know about it so that we can improve our level of service.
