Solid hardwood and tropical wood, in particular, have the potential to be sanded and refinished multiple times, extending their lifespan. In some cases, stairs without carpet are actually slipperier than carpeted stairs, but if the carpet is brand new, dirty, or just slick, it may seem like your stairs are the most slippery ones in existence. Fortunately, traction treads can be added over most stair surface materials, increasing the traction you’re able to get and reducing the risk of slipping.

It’s a good idea to install a rug pad under the carpet for your stairs. To make the pad fit, you’ll need to cut one section for each stair tread that’s about one inch narrower than the stair runner so that it won’t be visible once the carpet is installed on top.

The price can range from as low as $170 to as much as $850, depending on the brand, the thickness, and the labor cost. Although carpet padding will increase the overall cost of carpet installation, it also helps the carpet hold up longer, reduces noise in the room, and provides more insulation.
