"I recently hired HandyJ to help with a detailed wall mounting project, which included four large frames and over ten diplomas, certificates, and other important documents. From start to finish, the experience was seamless and professional. He arrived on time, came fully prepared with the right tools, and took great care in measuring, leveling, and positioning each item perfectly. The final result was not only functional but visually impressive? everything is aligned and securely mounted, giving the space a polished and cohesive look. Beyond the quality of work, he was courteous, efficient, and clearly takes pride in doing things right the first time. I highly recommend him for any detailed or precision-driven handyman projects. I will absolutely be reaching out again for future work."

"Kurt and his team rushed in to help us after our house fire. Having an old, Victorian style home, we were extremely particular about the quality of work and they completely took care of everything. They had drywall delivered, installed, and finished in no time. I challenge anyone to come through our house and find a seam or a screw hole. I've never seen better work!"

Handyman Services questions, answered by experts

In most states, handypeople do not need to be licensed to perform simple home repair tasks and smaller jobs. When projects exceed specific cost amounts, however, ranging from $500 in California to $50,000 in other states, some municipalities consider them to be contractors, meaning they need to be licensed. To learn if your handyperson should be licensed to work on your job, contact your local governing body or state contractors’ licensing board before starting any work.

Most contractors do not charge for meetings, but it can depend on the project, mainly if it includes detailed consultations or project planning. For general estimates, homeowners shouldn't expect to be charged. Always ask up front about meeting fees to avoid surprises and ensure you know what’s included in the process.

Pros save time and ensure quality by handling complex tasks and repairs efficiently.

Before hiring a handyperson, it's important to ask several questions to ensure they are the right fit for the job. Key areas to cover include their experience, logistics, and job specifics.

Experience and Qualifications:

  • What kind of work do you specialize in?

  • How long have you been doing this kind of work?

  • Are you licensed and insured?

  • Do you have references?

  • Can you provide before-and-after photos of your work?

Estimates and Contracts:

  • Do you charge for estimates?

  • Will you provide a written estimate and contract?

  • Does the estimate cover both labor and materials?

  • How much do you expect materials to cost?

Project Details and Guarantees:

  • When can you start the job, and how long do you expect it to take?

  • Do you provide a guarantee for your work?

  • Will you handle cleanup and waste disposal after the job is finished?

  • Do you have any questions about the projects on my list?

Reviewing your contract for termination terms is best when ending a relationship with a contractor. If there is nothing in the contract or you had a verbal agreement, communicate your decision in writing, citing specific reasons. Afterward, pay for the completed work per your original agreement. Remember you want a record of all correspondence in case you need a lawyer later to settle disputes.
