"Derek was very knowledge about what was needed for the deck which was not just the stain, but what the weather should be when staining -- both the work but the weather of the next couple of days as the stain dried. He was professional, knowledgeable and friendly. He came back a couple of days after the staining. to return my furniture to the deck,, as I was unable to do that. I highly recommend him."

"Matthew was very professional, he cleaned up after each project. I had him install bead board panels on the walls, trim out a window and crown and baseboard trim. I had several holes in the ceiling from removing a soffit and skylight removal a few years ago and Matt did a great job patching and blending it. I have asked him for quotes on five other projects. Thank you again for a great job!!!!"

Deck Repair questions, answered by experts

Always sand a deck before repainting so the wood is smooth and ready for paint. While you do not need to fully remove paint before repainting, sanding helps remove any areas with weather and sun damage. Sanding also helps remove chipped or flaking paint and opens the wood pores to improve paint adhesion.

You typically don’t need a railing and handrails on a deck that’s less than 30 inches from the ground. However, consider adding them regardless. Railings provide additional safety for you and your guests who use your deck—plus, railings give the deck a more finished look than it would have without them.

The problems with composite decking include a high rate of expansion and contraction from temperature swings. This characteristic can cause boards to split, delaminate, or peel. In addition, significant movement can cause shrinking, warping, twisting, and bending. For this reason, you should minimize moisture and ensure proper airflow below your deck.

Liquid rubber is great for waterproofing, but it can damage your deck if it’s not applied correctly. First, it can trap moisture in the wood if the deck isn’t completely dry before application.  Second, applying it too thickly can create a heavy, rubbery surface layer that peels and cracks under fluctuating temperatures. For the best results, ensure the wood is completely dry before application, and apply the liquid rubber in thin, even coats. A quick inspection every now and then will help you catch any issues early, keeping your deck protected and looking its best.

Rotting wood, loose railings, or unstable stairs may indicate a need for expertise.
