General Handy Man, everything from changing a light fixture to remodeling the whole room and many things in between! We also do some furniture refinishing and custom furniture building! Specializing in Bars, TV stands, coffee tables, custom shelving, etc... We take pride in being respectful, and most importantly honest! If it's something we can't fix, we won't. I have doing business since 1977, ny parents were furniture builders refinishers so I was brought up with woodworking and it is my passion. My main area of interest has always been antiques, restoration , refinishing , rebuilding and copying. I can build any thing that you can dream up or I will help with design. The usual job for refinishing takes about 3 weeks and pick up is available. I am the only one that will work on your item, I strip by hand and spray on a spar-urithane 4 coat finish that can be anywhere from a brite gloss to a matt finish. I am always open for a creative new job so let my 33 years of experience work for you.

Furniture Reupholstery questions, answered by experts

The average time it takes to reupholster a piece of furniture is around eight hours, but it varies significantly based on the piece. A professional can usually reupholster smaller furniture units like dining chairs or small ottomans in two to three hours, while an entire sofa might take several days or up to a week. Antique furniture tends to take longer to reupholster because greater care needs to be taken to preserve the piece. Your timeline might be a bit longer if you need other repairs done, like sanding and refinishing wood components.

The best way to test the quality of a leather couch is to put your hands on it. If the upholstery is soft and warm, that’s a good indication that the quality is higher. It should also smell like traditional leather. If it smells like chemicals, you’re probably dealing with low-grade leather.

Not always—heavily worn or broken furniture often isn’t worth repairing or refinishing (if it’s even possible). While some damage can be repaired and some of the visual appeal restored, major flaws, such as structural issues, can’t be fixed as easily. If you still want a cost-saving furniture refinishing project rather than purchasing all new, consider shopping for similar secondhand pieces at thrift stores, garage sales, and estate sales.

When deciding whether to reupholster, repair, or replace old furniture, consider its age, level of wear and tear, and overall value. It’s usually better to repair old furniture because older pieces tend to be made out of hardwood, like oak and maple, whereas newer furniture is more often made out of plywood, medium-density fiberboard (MDF), and other less durable materials. When determining whether it’s worth the price to repair a furniture item, calculate the price of buying a new, similar piece and compare that to quotes from local furniture repair services.

Doing your own upholstery work is possible, but it’s typically a better idea to leave the work to professionals. Without experience and the proper tools, it’s difficult to get a professionally finished appearance for your furniture, and many DIYers end up spending money on tools and materials only to hire a professional when they can’t get the fabric to look right. If you have reupholstery experience, feel free to give it a shot. However, if you’re not confident in your skill level or you’re working with antiques, it’s worth the money to hire a pro.
