KGI was built to bring fast reliable welding and art services back to Albuquerque. We can manufacture anything you could imagine and also offer painting and frame restoration, hand forged ornamental art, custom signs, gates, and mobile welding services. I hold five AWS certifications in structural welding which are SMAW & FCAW D1.1 all positions unlimited thickness, GTAW D1.2 Aluminum all positions up to 3/8" thick, SMAW D1.6 Stainless steel up to 3/8" thick, and GTAW B2 stainless and aluminum. I have a passion for hard work and making things with my hands, no job too big or too small and I welcome a challenge.

"We wanted something decorative not industrial. Kevin and his wife came up with an organic design that fits our landscaping and the surrounding terrain. It goes beyond the safety needs that we initially had since it also turned out to be a beautiful work of art. He consulted with us all along the way with photos, he is courteous, a skilled professional, prompt and considerate of our time. We are extremely pleased with the outcome. We've already talked to him about our next project and can't wait."

Welding questions, answered by experts

Lally columns are named after their founder, John Lally, who owned a construction company in the 1800s. He invented the columns as a means of providing temporary support for beams and rafters in homes his company was renovating. The original Lally columns were also made of steel, although the inventory used a thicker gauge metal, which provided additional support for larger projects and long-term structural solutions.

Some welding projects, such as repairing pipes or fences, require travel, whereas others, like furniture repair, do not necessarily require the welder to come to you. Travel and overhead factor into the overall cost of your welding project. Some of the most common welding projects include:

  • Metal furniture repair: $35–$100

  • Pipe repair: $200–$1,000

  • Small gates: $550–$750

  • Fencing: $1,200–$1,800

  • Fabricated sheet metal welding: $750–$2,500

You should pick steel for your new support beam for a few reasons. While steel is more expensive than other materials, such as laminated veneer lumber or glulam, it offers the following benefits:

  • Fire-resistant

  • Unaffected by pests

  • Longer-lasting

  • Stronger against water damage (when galvanized against rust)

Using a steel frame may raise the value of your home. Steel is more heat resistant, has better longevity, and doesn’t need any upkeep compared to traditional wood. You can also customize a steel build a little easier than other materials like brick, concrete, and vinyl—which have trouble bending and adapting to renovations.

The difference between a lintel and a beam is what loads each is responsible for supporting. A lintel is a type of beam that is responsible only for supporting the load above an opening, such as a window or door, and transfers the weight to the side walls around an opening. A beam supports the slab and transfers the load to nearby columns, which then disperse the load to the ground.
