There are quite a few differences between concrete and asphalt. Concrete is more costly up front and more challenging to repair. Asphalt does better in cold climates and works well with radiant heat systems. Porous asphalt is also excellent for wet climates, as it allows the water to drain away. If you're planning to lay new concrete over an old demolition site, reinforcements may be a good idea for larger builds, such as patios, decks, and concrete slabs. Generally, you shouldn’t lay artificial grass straight onto concrete. You’ll want to add some sort of underlayment that acts as a cushion. Just glue the grass to the underlayment using the proper adhesive.

Decomposed granite and caliche can both harden into a solid surface using a plate compactor. However, due to decomposed granite’s fine particles, it’s not suitable for driveway surfaces. Some homeowners use pea gravel mixed with a gravel-binding resin to bind the loose stones and create a solid surface that won’t shift like loose gravel.

While stamped concrete can last up to 50 years on average, a driveway will likely need repairs or resurfacing within 25 years. Comparatively, the life span of a stamped concrete driveway is much longer than those built with pavers or asphalt, which will often crack or break down under the weight of your vehicle much sooner.
