"Masonry by Tommy listened to our needs and offered ideas to make it better. He offers the best quality work. The workers are very professionals, polite, and neat. Their attention to detail and the appearance of their finished work is the best we have ever seen. In repointing old brick and laying concrete slabs, they matched the color of our 20-year-old masonry. I would highly recommend Tommy to everyone!"

"I am a widow of 2 years left with unfinished house inside and out. I had no choice with township on my back to just rely and trust strangers to get me through my darkest times. My experience was a mix. Some pride on their work and sadly others just rob you. I hired Chris because he smiled he listened he understood and he spent time to make sure he knew exactly what I wanted I needed and very important what I could afford. The end result Chris finished my husbandâ s retaining wall-absolutely perfect. My husband the perfectionist would agree. Chris did the front stairs my long walkway . Grass is now growing. All thank you Chris. Yes Chris is honest reliable. At the end you will say a job well done."

"Prior to these guys saving our property, we foolishly hired an under-qualified contractor to install a large patio and retaining wall system. It turned out to be a never ending nightmare from the start that left us with pooling water everywhere, mud leaking thru walls and stairs that were falling apart. We hired Classical Pavers to hopefully resolve all our issues, and boy did they deliver. These guys are true landscape engineers! They uprooted the previously installed pavers, flawlessly re-pitched and graded the base, planned for all the possible drainige issues that might come up, and completely cleaned the pavers and property of any remnants of their work. I could not be happier with the professionalism of every level of their services. I would absolutely recommend them, and only use them for any and all future projects."

Masonry questions, answered by experts

Start by confirming permit requirements with the local building department, as structural repairs and new construction require approval. You must hire licensed contractors for permitted projects to comply with New Jersey construction codes. Schedule your masonry work between May and October to avoid cold-weather complications. Because local professionals book up quickly for summer projects, secure your contractor in early spring. Finally, check local zoning rules for retaining wall and fence setbacks.

Helpful?

Completing proactive masonry work directly boosts your property value and curb appeal. Buyers in Bergen County pay close attention to structural conditions, and unresolved foundation or chimney defects will delay sales or reduce offers. Repairing front steps and walkways creates an excellent first impression. Furthermore, New Jersey law requires sellers to disclose known material defects. Documented repairs with closed permits serve as proof of proper maintenance, giving future buyers total confidence.

Helpful?

Inspect your home for new cracks, surface flaking, or crumbling mortar every spring. Dumont experiences harsh freeze-thaw cycles that expand water inside mortar joints, causing severe damage over time. You should also look for white salt deposits, which indicate heavy rainfall is moving through your bricks. Since many local homes date back to the mid-twentieth century, original mortar joints eroding past a quarter-inch deep require immediate masonry work to keep your structure safe.

Helpful?

Brick chimneys and concrete block foundations require regular masonry work due to local freeze-thaw cycles and heavy clay soils. You will also see significant wear on front steps, stoops, and walkways exposed to winter road salt. Additionally, sloped properties in Dumont feature retaining walls that experience heavy soil pressure and frost heave. Inspect these specific areas annually to catch early signs of cracking, mortar deterioration, or water infiltration.

Helpful?

Closely spaced homes in Dumont limit equipment access for foundation excavation and chimney repairs. Older homes feature solid brick walls or rubble stone foundations that require specialized, historically accurate mortar to prevent structural damage. Properties near local waterways face high water tables, making foundation masonry work more complex. You must also account for underground utilities; state law requires marking all utility lines before digging near property boundaries to ensure a safe project.
