"Emily Home Improvement was great. They came out quickly, fixed the problem with my gutters and left. It was easy and efficient without the hassle of a 90 minute presentation. Just straight to the point at a fair price. Honestly, the best experience I’ve had with home improvement place in a long time. Would hire again in future"

"Tim introduced himself to me, and he listened to my problem with my gutters. He offered to clean the main areas that tend to have issues for $80. Although I thought this was a gimmick to bait and switch from a free estimate at first, I was wrong! Tim not only cleaned the gutters in all collection points, but also used silicone to replace a dried-out previous repair. What other contractors told me was that I needed to replace my gutters at the front of my home for $1,000 to $1,600. Tim is an honest contractor that I will keep in my contacts for future projects."

"A1 Gutters is honest and fair, the quality was outstanding. Amazing customer service, they take pictures of your roof so you can see it sit down and talk with them and then they do the repairs and they take pictures of all the repairs so you can compare them to the pictures that they took prior to and the work is quality the best part. "I reached out to champion and five other companies for an estimate on a new roof. While their estimate was neither the highest or lowest, it was acceptable, but it was the caring of the owner to answer my questions/concerns and make sure I understood everything that was appreciated. Their team worked hard the two days prior to Thanksgiving doing everything to not just make my roof look good, but be safe and last. When finished, everything was cleaned and put back where it was prior to the work starting. They came back to replace my gutters as well and again did a spectacular job. My home is old and the last roof/gutter work was over 30 years ago. There were some unexpected issues that can happen with an old home, but they were happy to work with me to get as much taken care of correctly as we could. I highly recommend them."

"Aron and his crew from Sweet Home Construction were prompt, courteous, and totally professional. My project started out with a small sink hole in my driveway and ended up with major repairs to stucco and brand new front steps. My house is 100+ years old and there was a lot of water damage that came to light as things were uncovered. Sweet Home Construction was not inexpensive, but I have no complaints about their work and I am grateful for the excellent care they took to make sure I ended up a very satisfied customer. I will definitely call Aron again when I am ready for my next project."

Gutter Repair and Replacement questions, answered by experts

Downspouts channel water from your roof and gutters into the ground following a specific route so water doesn’t accumulate around your house’s foundation. Without a downspout, the standing water will wash away material and disrupt the soil, leading to foundation erosion. The standing water will also form ice around your house during cold weather, causing a safety hazard.

The most common problem with gutters is clogging from debris like leaves, blossoms, and seeds from surrounding trees. This debris can block downspouts, leading to improper drainage and water overflow.

Other common issues include:

  • Leaks and holes, which can often be repaired with gutter sealant or caulk.

  • Rust, sagging, or detachment from the roofline.

  • Damage from strong storms.

  • Improperly pitched gutters that don't drain correctly.

Regular cleaning in the spring and fall is the best way to prevent most of these problems. You may need to clean them more often during periods of heavy leaf fall.

No—gutters should be designed and properly installed so they are ready to handle any level of rainflow from your roof. If you notice pooling water around your gutters or on the roof, it’s imperative that you contact a gutter repair pro near you—the slope of your gutters could be off and need adjusting.

Unless you've chosen to install underground downspouts, your gutter downspouts shouldn't touch the ground. If they come into contact with the soil or pavement next to your home, rainwater can back up into them during a storm, preventing them from doing their job effectively. Instead, aim to have your downspouts end about 12 inches from the ground.

With routine maintenance, gutters don’t usually need to be replaced for 20 years, but there are warning signs that they might need early replacement. Signs that your gutters need to be replaced include sagging, visible cracks or holes, peeling paint, rust, standing water in your gutter, and water leaking into your basement. Pushing off replacing your gutters can lead to extensive damage to both the interior and exterior of your home. Regular maintenance can help your gutters last all 20 years — and sometimes, even longer.
