When connecting a gutter to a downspout, make sure that both have the same outlet capacity. Meaning starting from your gutter and moving downwards, the diameter should match so you have a secure seal. There are five main types of gutter hangers, and all offer different benefits. Spikes and ferrules aren’t as durable as brackets and straps and wrap-around hangers, but they aren’t as expensive and will get the job done. Worried more about curb appeal than gutter strength? T-bar or T-strap and hidden hangers will keep these important gutter elements out of sight.

Place screws for gutter fascia brackets on every other rafter tail or a distance of no more than three feet apart. Rafter tails are typically spaced 16 inches apart from the center, allowing you to place brackets 32 inches apart.

Buried downspouts can freeze during cold weather as cold water runs through them. If you’ve discovered your downspouts are frozen, you can carefully pour hot water down the top of the downspout to defrost them. If that doesn’t work, you may need to dig your downspout back up. It’s recommended that you clean your gutters after a severe storm, however, regular storms don’t raise the same concerns. Look for signs your gutter might need cleaning after a harsh storm.
