"Paul Swann evaluated our foundation problem and referred us to an engineer who provided a detailed repair plan. Unfortunately, the nature and scope of the proposed repair plan was outside the parameters of what Northern Basement System's themselves could provide. We appreciated their honesty and have been looking for a contractor to take on the project."

"Joe,James and Bobby did an excellent job replacing the sump pump And drains. My husband and I were so impressed with their abilities and how hard working they were. "The work itself, the actual basement waterproofing appears to be working but our flood season hasn't come yet so, I'm reserving judgement. But, the way the work was done was a problem and the initial way that they got with the problem wasn't satisfactory. Eventually, months after work I did get some resolution but is wasn't a smooth transaction. We moved some of the finished portions of the basement to do their work and the way that that was handled was very sloppy and rushed, and very expensive to repair. And then, when the initial point of having somebody come and look at all my questions, it was not the owner, it was his foreman and it was not dealt within a professional manner. After 2 contacts, tried to explain what the problems were and has offered that they have an annual service to make sure that everything is working and there's a fee for that, though he offered 2 years of that with no cost, so that was a nice gesture. He tried to make up for the problems but like I said, there were problems."

Basement Waterproofing FAQs, answered by experts

Yes, you can finish a basement that leaks, as long as you address the leak first. Before finishing a basement, you’ll need to repair any cracks in the walls and waterproof the basement to prevent future leaks. It’s much harder to clean up a water leak from a finished basement than an unfinished one, so preemptively addressing any leaking areas prevents expensive repairs in the future.

The best ventilation for a crawl space is a fully encapsulated crawl space with its own separate ventilation system. If you go this route, ensure you have the proper crawl space code requirements done and dusted before encapsulating your crawl space with a moisture barrier and installing appliances that may not be up to the proper specs.

In most cases, yes, because the large majority of basements leak or will have moisture issues at some point, and waterproofing methods can mitigate that risk or eliminate it entirely. Plus, water and moisture issues can be quite problematic, as they can lead to mold growth, rotting of building materials, structural damage, poor indoor air quality, increased electric bills, and other problems.

As the first layer of water protection for your roof deck and the building materials below, underlayment is designed to prevent water damage, so it’s okay if it gets wet. However, you shouldn’t rely solely on underlayment for protection. If rain interrupts your roof project and you have all of the underlayment down, you’ll likely be fine, but you should install shingles over that layer as soon as possible, as long-term exposure can lead to water damage.

Yes, it is possible to over-dehumidify a house by removing too much moisture from the air. This can create an overly dry environment that negatively affects those with respiratory or skin issues, and may cause your skin, hair, and sinuses to feel dry. However, this is unlikely to happen with most modern dehumidifiers, as they are equipped with moisture sensors and adjustable settings. These features allow the unit to pause automatically when the desired humidity level is reached, preventing the air from becoming uncomfortably dry. In contrast, older or more basic dehumidifiers left running for too long could potentially over-dry the air. To avoid this, aim for a balance between removing excess moisture and maintaining a comfortable environment. You can often monitor your home's humidity levels using a modern thermostat for guidance.
