Yes, installing underlayment underneath the laminate flooring is necessary. The underlayment has many benefits like preventing water damage to your subfloors, insulating the floor for sound, and providing an even surface for the planks to sit on.

When you skip the underlayment, you can end up with serious issues, including water damage to your subfloors, noisy planks, and an uneven floor.

To prep a floor for painting, start by sweeping and cleaning any loose debris that could puncture the protective material. Take out as much furniture as possible. Then lay plastic, canvas, rosin paper, or masonite sheets across the room, securing them at the edges with masking tape. Plan your painting so that you minimize the chances you’ll step in and track any splatters.

Start the first row of vinyl planks along the longest or most visible wall in the room. This will create a clean, straight foundation row to build off of. Snap a chalk line to guide the first row, and use spacers for the most precise installation—these maintain an even extension gap between the flooring planks and the wall.
