"Carolina East Home Improvements did a great job repairing my chimney outside. They also repaired inside Sheetrock around the chimney and a minor repair of Sheetrock in a spare bedroom. They then painted the ceiling in both rooms. They replaced a pull down door going to the attic in my garage and built a set of stair to walk up to the attic with a sliding door. Did an awesome job."

Small jobs welcome

"Did a great job for us. Took out an old asphalt driveway and installed a new and expanded one. Also added two concrete walkways in the back yard and a stamped concrete walkway in the front yard. So pleased with the work they did and their work ethic and they are such nice people. Certainly would recommend them to anyone."

"This is a very professional company that produces high-quality products. They built a beautiful patio and sidewalk for me at a very reasonable price. They followed through as promised and communicated effectively throughout the project. One more thing - I am often shy about endorsing companies, but Iâ ve been raving about this company with family, friends, and neighbors!"

"Wow! Driveway repair and extension started yesterday and finished today. Misael and his crew were hardworking and very professional! I would love to upload pictures but this site is telling me my pictures are too large. You can find them on Facebook at RMZ Concrete LLC. I highly recommend him for concrete work!"

Asphalt Driveways questions, answered by experts

While some areas may allow for a slope of up to 20%, this is often the maximum slope for driveways, with a few exceptions of up to 25%. Other regions may have a maximum of 12%, 15%, or 18%, so check with your local building department to ensure you’re laying a driveway that is up to code for your location.

The material that’s best for your private road depends on your property, the climate in your area, and your personal preferences. Gravel is an affordable option, but some homeowners don’t like how it looks. It can be a pain to remove snow from, and it requires more ongoing maintenance than asphalt or concrete. However, while these other options require less maintenance and make snow removal a breeze, they’re more expensive and will need repairs from time to time. Ultimately, you’ll have to choose the road material that suits you and your property best.

An ideal driveway gradient is between 2% and 5%. Anything lower than 1% or higher than 15% can cause problems for your car or property. A driveway with less than a 1% slope increases your likelihood of flooding and water damage, while a driveway with a 15% grade or higher can be too steep for safe traveling.

When hiring an asphalt paving contractor to install your driveway, ask as many questions up front as possible. Here are a few questions to ask a prospective driveway contractor:

  • How many years of experience do you have?

  • Are you licensed, bonded, and insured?

  • Do you have worker’s compensation?

  • Do you use subcontractors on your projects?

  • Do you clean up after the job is done?

  • Who is responsible for any damage to lawn or landscaping?

  • Do you provide a guarantee or warranty on your work?

  • Do you give free estimates?

  • What is the timeline for completion?

  • How do you handle change orders?

  • Can you provide at least three references?

  • Can I see some of the work you’ve done?

Cobblestone is just one of many driveway materials. Other, more economical, albeit less elaborate options include concrete, asphalt, and gravel.

If you want a material that most closely resembles cobblestone, your best option is bricks or pavers. Both cost anywhere from $10 to $50 per square foot and can be laid in all kinds of patterns. Depending on the type of paver you choose, you can also get a good bang for your buck by investing in durable natural stone.
