"I absolutely recommend Weathertite roofing.  They did a prompt thorough evaluation and repair.  They are #1 on my list for roofing, gutters, skylight and shutter repairs. The problem: I discovered a leak near a skylight on my porch.  I contacted Home Advisor for skylight repair.  In short order I got a call from weathertite. They were able come that day and evaluate the problem; a blue tarp was placed to protect the roof from the afternoon rain.  They scheduled repairs after the rain passed.  Larry found several problem areas with the skylight flashing, flashing where the porch roof joined the house and leaky shingles.   Replacement flashings, shingles were installed and he caulked windows and rerouted/replaced a downspout.  Basically he restored and improved the porch roof to a like new condition.   The work was done on schedule, quickly and cleaned up all debris from the repair."

"Bill was very professional. They installed a roof for me in 2013 and I knew then I would use them again.  They are very professional and courteous.  They explained everything in detail and followed-up. They also did a great job cleaning up after the work was completed. Most recently, I have used BTR for repair and "handyman" work. I had the same experience with them.  I would use them again.

"It went well as provider went up on the roof, checked all boots and also walked entire roof to check for any hail damage or issues.  He advised me there was no hail damage or issues with my roof.  Also advised the boots were well in place and were as they should be.  Provider also went up into the attic and checked for any water and found everything to be dry and no issues or leaks. I felt reassured all was well with my roof.  He also advised me the roof was in very good condition.  I appreciated his efforts."

Skylights questions, answered by experts

Leaks are the top concern for skylights, often due to improper installation or worn-out seals. Over time, water can seep in and cause major damage to your home’s ceilings and walls. Other common issues include condensation, which leads to mold, as well as physical damage from weather or debris. If they’re not sealed properly, skylights can also bring unwanted heat in the summer or cold in the winter, affecting your home’s energy efficiency and tacking on extra dollars to your bills.

Yes, you can cover up a skylight if you no longer wish to have it in your space. There are a few options for covering up a skylight. One option is to install a skylight cover or shade that can be easily opened or closed as needed, allowing you to control the amount of light entering the room. Another option is to cover the skylight with a solid material, such as plywood or drywall, effectively sealing it off. However, when covering a skylight, it's essential to ensure proper insulation and waterproofing to prevent any issues in the future.

Whether you need a permit to install a skylight depends on the scope of the project and local regulations. Generally, permits are required if the installation involves altering the structural components of your home, such as moving roof rafters. In some municipalities, a permit might also be necessary if the skylight protrudes above the highest point of your existing roof. However, if no structural changes are made, a permit may not be needed. The cost for a skylight installation permit is typically under $100. A convenient time to add a skylight is during a roof replacement, as your contractor can incorporate the new opening into the design.

Yes, solar tubes are easier to install than skylights because they’re lighter, smaller, and easier to handle. They also require less roof cutting and have a faster, simpler installation process. This means they’re a more DIY-friendly option for homeowners who want to add more natural light to their homes.

Yes, if you have ventilated skylights, you can install insect screens on them. Insect screens for skylights cost $10 to $50 each, depending on their size and quality. Most pros highly recommend insect screens for ventilated skylights because they keep pests outside of your home while allowing fresh air inside.
