"We needed this repair asap due to rain deterioration. Clean Hands arranged to come on a Saturday morning. The team did a rebuild in less than 4 hours. Terrific job!! They also followed up to set a date for stain once the wood has cured. I have used Clean Hands several times over the past 5 years and will continue to do so."

"Jacob did an excellent job. The house is mostly brick. He cleaned the brick and the trim and some painted wood work and vinyl gutters. This work had not been done since we built the house over 30 years ago. The result made it look new again. He had a good crew and they all took care. My biggest concern was accidentally blowing water into the wall cavities and attic. They made sure that didn’t happen. Yes I would and I will hire them again."

"Tom screened in our existing covered porch for us. I initially contacted him via Angie's List and then received a phone call to set up an appointment. Tom recommended we use solar screens vs. traditional screens and I'm so glad we did. We went with the 80% UV blockage screens in brown. They also provide some privacy from the outside looking in, which wasn't a big concern for us but it a nice plus. Tom and 1 other employee completed the work in two (very hot!) days. He also built us a custom screen door using Douglas Fir to match the existing deck wood. We couldn't be happier with the finished product and will likely hire Tom for additional projects around the house."

"I contracted these young men to re-cover my deck/stairs, upgrade the support beams and add additional stairs/ramp. They did a great job at a reasonable price. After completion of this project, I was so impressed with the quality/workmanship, I had them estimate another decking project for an addition to my front porch. I'd recommend these gentlemen for any of your handyman needs."

"We enjoyed working with Craftsman Direct. They are very responsive and professional. Randy and his partner paid very close attention to detail. We have a complicated pattern on our front railing, yet they were able to replicate it and make it look good as new. Even the staining was done meticulously, paying attention to all nooks and crannies in our wooden deck. Very nice result.  We will call them again if we need more work in the future.

"Everything done well. Very particular about painting (which is good). Cleaned up and rehung all materials on walls. Friendly but not time wasting. Everything done well and as expected."

Deck Cleaning questions, answered by experts

Before installing a deck, you must build a base for the deck to rest upon, often made of compacted soil or gravel. While gravel is an optional material, it helps with drainage. Some contractors also recommend installing a weed control membrane, which helps provide a solid foundation for the frame. In the case of an elevated deck, a pro will often lay down a concrete slab as a foundation.

Coping is the material that lines the perimeter of a pool and seals the transition between the top of the pool wall and the water. Decking surrounds the poolscape and extends far beyond the water's edge to provide a safe walking and lounging area. In short, coping is the border between the decking and the pool itself.

A wood deck requires annual cleaning and regular inspections for loose or broken boards, nails, and screws. It should be refinished by applying a stain or sealer every two to three years to protect the wood from water damage, rot, mildew, and sun fading. The exact frequency can depend on the climate and the deck's exposure to sun and moisture. If your deck is painted, it will need repainting approximately every 10 years. Signs that your deck needs refinishing include faded, splintering, or warping boards.

Yes, deck pier blocks can be used as an alternative to traditional deck footings, particularly for small or low-to-the-ground decks. Unlike poured concrete and buried post footings, deck blocks don’t require digging or pouring. However, their use is regulated by local building codes, and they may not be permitted in areas prone to high winds, earthquakes, or hurricanes. Always consult your local building codes before choosing them for your deck project.

Both composite and PVC decking are excellent alternatives to wood. However, while composite is moderately priced and lasts around 30 years, PVC costs more and lasts longer. PVC is also more durable, though both materials are more durable than wood decking. Ultimately, the choice between composite and PVC decking will come down to your budget and preferences.
