I started Custom Finishes in 1991 after working for a large contractor and learning the trade of wallpaper installation. I have worked with designers from New York, Jacksonville, Atlanta, and Los Angeles as well as several locally. Do to my reputation for great customer service I was asked to install window treatments for a big box store. Over the years the number of store has grown. This lead to Graber approaching me to become a certified installer of their products.

Of the other two companies, Total Construction had the best estimate and the people were so nice. I'm so glad they came out to do the work. Each day they cleaned up behind themselves and made it easy for my family to live in the home even though the work was being done. Everything looks so nice now. If you are thinking of selling soon, make sure your wallpaper hanging is on-point and looks professional with no crooked seams, evenly matched patterns, and minimal bubbling or other imperfections.

To layer wallpaper over wallpaper, inspect your existing wallpaper for problem areas. Damaged wallpaper should not be covered. If it’s okay to proceed, prep by turning off the electricity and removing any outlet and switch covers. Dust your walls and lightly rinse them to prevent the existing paper from peeling. Apply primer, then apply your new wallpaper.

While peel-and-stick wallpapers require no time to cure, the adhesives for other types of papers will take a day or two to dry and up to three weeks to fully cure. The differences are the type of paper, the type of adhesive, and the humidity and temperature in the space.

Painting over wallpaper is an efficient way to cover it if it’s in decent shape. Before painting over wallpaper, make sure the surface is clean and smooth. You may have to remove minor problem areas, such as lifted seams or small peels, with a sheetrock knife or putty knife. Add a latex- or oil-based primer to keep moisture at bay before painting. You’ll likely need two coats of paint to cover the area.
