Precast concrete can last from 50 to 100 years or more. Precast concrete may have a longer lifespan than cast-in-place concrete due to the controlled curing conditions and lack of environmental exposure during the curing process. Concrete blemishes such as chipped steps or small cracks are fixable with patching. For bigger jobs, including driveway repair and cracks wider than a 1/4 of an inch, patches will only serve as a temporary fix. Resurfacing is ideal when the surface is showing more widespread wear—like if it’s pitted, rough, or has lots of cracks. Resurfacing gives your concrete a fresh, like-new appearance without needing a full replacement.

When the concrete is severely cracked, sinking, or otherwise structurally unsound, replacing it might be your best option. Replacement ensures the safety and longevity of the surface in this case.

The trick to getting a smooth finish when pouring concrete is to smooth the surface of the concrete with a magnesium float. This tool helps bring the finer, smoother aggregate to the surface for a cleaner finish. Don’t overdo the floating process, though, or the slab can become weaker and start to scale.

Drying concrete faster after rain is tricky because you’d need to increase the temperature or airflow over your slab, both of which are challenging to do outdoors. It can help to remove water from your concrete quickly, though, as the faster you remove rain from the surface, the lower the risk of the water affecting the ratio of your concrete mix. Use squeegees or mops to remove water, and consider covering your slab with a tarp to protect it from future rainfall.
