Houses naturally settle over time, but they should settle uniformly with no apparent settling in one spot. If your floor is uneven but only in a particular area of your home, differential settlement could be the problem. This can be caused by improper drainage, erosion, expanding soil, earthquake activity, or poor construction techniques.
For rooms with an even number of feet (10 x 12, for example), you can technically just multiply them together to get the number of square feet in the room (10 feet x 12 feet = 120 sq. ft.). For irregularly shaped rooms or areas that aren’t even square feet, converting to inches will be your best bet for an accurate measurement.
Dry rot or severe water damage may warrant a replacement, but you don’t always need to replace damaged subflooring. If your subfloor has warped because it was installed incorrectly, you can sometimes shim the panels (in other words, add a thin, wedge-shaped piece of wood to level the surface). If your subfloor bows upward, you may be able to sand it down at the joist so it’s level, depending on the extent of the damage.
It’s a good idea to install a rug pad under the carpet for your stairs. To make the pad fit, you’ll need to cut one section for each stair tread that’s about one inch narrower than the stair runner so that it won’t be visible once the carpet is installed on top.

Far from just being a boring gray, you can stain, stamp, and even paint concrete to match your style and decor. If concrete is not your thing, consider ceramic tile flooring. It is waterproof, stain resistant, and perfect for wet rooms like kitchens and bathrooms. Luxury vinyl tile also requires very little care; it is water and stain resistant, very durable, and affordable.
