A lacquer finish is thin, fast-drying, and best used for cabinets, molding, and trim. It’s not recommended for outdoor furniture. While paint drying smoothly on a wall is ideal, a can full of dry paint is not. To open a can of dry paint, you’ll need a tool with a sharp edge, such as a utility knife or a box cutter. Take your tool and score the area where the lid meets the can to break through the dried-up paint. Then, use a paint can opener or a flathead screwdriver to pry the lid open and check the state of the contents. For smaller cans with plastic lids, you can run the top under hot water to loosen the lid. 

The best ways to protect floors when painting depend in part on the type of paint you’re using.  When you’re using latex paint, most people will choose a drop cloth consisting of canvas, plastic, or heavy paper to protect the floor. If you are using oil-based paint, you may want to select a waterproof plastic sheet that will keep any paint from seeping through.

You can use either paint thinner or mineral spirits to clean paint brushes, but both have distinct advantages. Paint thinners are better solvents, making them a good option if you need to clean your brushes quickly or if you are dealing with dried paint, which mineral spirits can’t remove. On the other hand, mineral spirits have less toxicity, less odor, and lower volatility. It is safer to use indoors and doesn’t evaporate as quickly if you need to leave the brushes to soak.
