"LeafFilter doesn't clean gutters, they sell and install their LeafFilter Gutter products and only clean the gutters if you buy their product. I can't even begin to afford their product so I wasn't able to get my gutter cleaned by them."

"I'd start by saying we were able to schedule the visit within a week of calling, which was awesome because we had a timeline we needed to follow. Mike and Kevin were great. They called while on the way and arrived on time. They explained what they were going to do in a manner that was easy to understand. They were friendly with all the occupants of our house- including our pets! They were neat and took precautions to avoid making a mess or tracking anything into the house. After doing an incredibly thorough job and cleaning up all of their equipment, we got to see before and after pictures of our duct work and the difference was really impressive. Mike and Kevin were really hard workers and very nice guys. And after the sanitizer was applied, they left our house much cleaner and smelling really good. 5 stars. A+. I would absolutely recommend to anyone needing duct cleaning done. Everyone we have dealt with from Service Today has been great."

Gutter Cleaning questions, answered by experts

Yes, there are several downsides to installing rain chains. For one, rain chains have a lower flow capacity than a typical gutter and downspout system. This means that if there is a rainstorm, the rain chain can stop working completely. Rain chains also cannot redirect rainwater away from your house. In homes with a sloped yard, this could cause water damage in your foundation or basement.

Underground downspouts refer to the sections of downspout extensions that lead away from your home and gutter system. While they cost more than traditional extensions, they can provide several benefits, such as less frequent damage and no need to move them for lawn care tasks. Whether they're worth it or not depends on your budget at installation time and how much convenience they'll add to your situation.

The most common problem with gutters is clogging from debris like leaves, blossoms, and seeds from surrounding trees. This debris can block downspouts, leading to improper drainage and water overflow.

Other common issues include:

  • Leaks and holes, which can often be repaired with gutter sealant or caulk.

  • Rust, sagging, or detachment from the roofline.

  • Damage from strong storms.

  • Improperly pitched gutters that don't drain correctly.

Regular cleaning in the spring and fall is the best way to prevent most of these problems. You may need to clean them more often during periods of heavy leaf fall.

Failing to clean your gutters can lead to serious and costly damage. When leaves and other debris cause blockages, water cannot drain properly and will overflow. This can lead to water pooling around your home’s foundation, causing basement flooding and structural damage. The overflow can also damage your roof, siding, and fascia boards, with the constant moisture promoting mold, mildew, and rot. The weight of wet debris can cause gutters to sag or break, while stagnant water creates a breeding ground for pests like mosquitoes and rodents. Additionally, runoff can damage landscaping or freeze on driveways and patios, causing cracks. To prevent these issues, it is recommended to clean your gutters at least once or twice a year.

If you don't want to install gutter guards, the most common and inexpensive alternative is regular gutter cleaning, either annually, biannually, or as soon as they start to fill up. Using a leaf blower attachment can make this process easier. Other products designed to reduce cleanings include gutter screens (made of wire mesh, nylon, or foam), which are typically less expensive than a full gutter guard installation. You can also find guards and inserts designed specifically to protect your downspouts or opt for a whole gutter system like LeafGuard, which integrates the gutter and guard into a single product.
